Marlins claimed RHP Wikelman González off waivers from the White Sox

González, who came to the White Sox as part of the Garrett Crochet deal, was surprisingly designated for assignment over the weekend. The 24-year-old was a starter in the Red Sox organization before the White Sox converted him to a reliever. He had a 2.66 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 25/12 K/BB ratio in 20 1/3 innings for the White Sox last year. However, he struggled in Triple-A this year, posting a 6.57 ERA in 24 2/3 innings. Of course, that also came with a 28.6 percent strikeout rate. The Marlins will look to regain some of González former value.

Nolan Arenado is back in the Arizona lineup as a designated hitter Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Though he hasn’t had a setback with his finger, Roman Anthony is out of Double-A Portland’s lineup for Wednesday’s game.

The Red Sox want to ease Anthony back into action, so he’s resting today after going 2-for-2 with a homer and two walks in his first rehab game Tuesday. He’s slated to play left field on Thursday and then DH on Friday.

Tyler Stephenson is DHing for the first time this season Wednesday against the Cardinals.

The Reds called up Will Banfield as a third catcher on Tuesday, making it easier to use Stephenson as a DH when he’s not behind the plate. Stephenson gets the nod against Matthew Liberatore today even though he’s hitting just .175 against lefties this season. The right-handed hitter actually has pretty bizarre splits. He’s slugging .458 against righties and just .228 against lefties, but he has a 76/20 K/BB in 273 plate appearances versus righties yet an excellent 15/17 K/BB in 74 plate appearances against lefties. With Stephenson DHing, Eugenio Suárez is playing third base and Ke’Bryan Hayes is on the bench.
