Trent Grisham homers in loss to blue Jays

The Phillies were leading 8-1 at the time, so there was no big fight to keep him in the game. There’s a good chance he’ll be back out there on Sunday.

Tyler O’Neill had the go-ahead hit in the 10th. Alonso followed that with a single and was checked on at first base, but he remained in the game and the Orioles said afterwards that it was just a calf cramp. Alonso’s homer was hit 392 feet off of Ian Seymour. He’s tied for ninth in the majors in homers and eighth with 78 RBI.

Bradish, who finished with only three strikeouts and four whiffs on 35 swings, left in line for the win, but a one-run lead was blown in the ninth, keeping him 7-11 with a 3.65 ERA. His next start will come against Yankees. He’s faced them twice this season, turning in one of his best outings (one hit in six scoreless innings) and one of his worst (five runs in four innings). It probably doesn’t mean much, especially since both of those came in May with Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger healthy.

Kittredge blew a save against his former team in the bottom of the ninth but then got a win after Rays closer Bryan Baker allowed the automatic runner to score in the 10th, resulting in a loss to his former team. Cam Sanders worked the bottom of the 10th and ended up with his second save in two days for the Orioles, though he’s still probably behind at least Yennier Cano and Kittredge on Baltimore’s closing depth chart. Cano had this one off after throwing 24 pitches last night.

Seymour struck out nine and allowed just four hard-hit balls. Unfortunately, two of those hard-hit balls were homers from Pete Alonso and Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Still, he did notch a third straight quality start. Seymour figures to take his next turn Thursday against the Blue Jays, and he rates as a decent play in mixed leagues, He might be bumped from the Tampa Bay rotation if Griffin Jax returns at the end of the month.

That’s a tough break for the AL Reliever of the Year candidate. Baker, the MLB saves leader with 34 in 37 tries, had gone 48 appearances without taking a loss this season.

Mesa didn’t start the game because of hamstring tightness. Even if he’s feeling better, he’ll likely be out of the lineup again Sunday with the Orioles throwing a lefty in Trevor Rogers.

Holderman retired two of the three Padres batters he faced before throwing a wild pitch on his first offering to Jackson Merrill. That was the end of his night. Hunter Gaddis replaced him and was able to retire Merrill to finish the inning.

Smith, one of the three prospects the Tigers picked up from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade, exited in the second inning of his start for High-A West Michigan. The 21-year-old was making just his second start since arriving in the organization.

Yoshida blew a tire running out a double against the Pirates. He was able to walk off the field okay, but it still looked like an IL-type situation. The good news there is that the Red Sox might get Roman Anthony back in a week or so. Until then, either Nate Eaton or maybe Kristian Campbell could be called up to help fill in. Anthony Seigler replaced him in the DH spot tonight.
