Chip Cannon blasted his AFL-leading sixth and seventh homers Thursday for Phoenix.
Cannon, a 2004 eighth-round pick out of The Citadel, is batting .375/.475/.854 in 48 at-bats. It’s hitting for average that was a problem at Double-A New Hampshire this year, as he finished at .248/.335/.476 with 27 homers in 475 at-bats. He turns 25 at the end of next month, so he’s a long shot to have a career in the majors. He’d have to prove he can hit .280-.290 anyway in Triple-A in order to earn an opportunity.

Randy Vásquez allowed four hits over six innings in the Padres’ 2-0 shutout of the Mariners on Friday.
He struck out three and walked none. Vásquez surrendered 11 hard-hit balls, including nine over 100 mph, but nothing much fell in against him. In the fifth, Jhonny Pereda hit a liner to left with a .960 xBA, only to watch Ramón Laureano make a diving catch in left field and then double Cole Young off second base. Vásquez improved to 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA. He has a home start against the Dodgers coming up next week.
What has made Bleday so successful lately?
Eric Samulski discusses how Cincinnati Reds' J.J. Bleday has been "one of the hottest hitters in baseball" recently, going over key statistics that speak to his success and why fantasy managers should look out for him.

Mason Miller got four outs for his 14th save Friday against the Mariners.
Miller came into a 2-0 game with two outs in the eighth and gave up an infield single before striking out Connor Joe to end the rally. In the ninth, he walked J.P. Crawford to lead off the inning and gave up a one-out single to Cole Young, but he struck out the other three batters he faced. On the last of those, he retired Brendan Donovan on five pitches, only one of which was in the strike zone. Miller threw 34 pitches tonight, so he might get Saturday off. That would probably put Jason Adam in line for a save opportunity.

Emerson Hancock pitched six innings of one-run ball and struck out six Friday against the Padres.
Hancock gave up 11 hard-hit balls, but the Padres managed only four singles and a double against him. It was a performance worthy of a win, but since the Mariners failed to score in the 2-0 loss, Hancock dropped to 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA. He’ll make his next start Wednesday at home against the White Sox.

Sung-Mun Song singled and knocked in one of the Padres’ two runs Friday against the Mariners.
The RBI came on a groundout in the seventh, making in a 2-0 game. Song had a basehit earlier, though, and he had a nice drive to the warning track for a flyout in the ninth. If only the game had been played in GABP or Yankee Stadium, rather than Petco, that might have been good for his first MLB home run. Song is batting .176/.300/.235 through his first 20 plate appearances.

Andy Pages hit a three-run homer Friday in the Dodgers’ 6-0 shutout of the Angels on Friday.
After Blake Snell got scratched and landed on the IL, eight Dodgers combined on a two-hit shutout tonight. Pages opened the scoring in the fourth with his three-run homer off Jack Kochanowicz, and Max Muncy then made it back-to-back jacks. Teoscar Hernández provided insurance with his two-run homer blast in the sixth. Pages now has 10 homers and, as everyone expected, is tied with Liam Hicks for the major league lead in RBI with 38.

Jack Kochanowicz was tagged for six runs and three homers over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Friday.
Kochanowicz gave up two homers and four runs in the fourth, but the Angels wanted more innings from him tonight and got him through the sixth at a cost of two more runs. It was probably the right strategy, as the offense never showed any sign of taking advantage of a bullpen game from the Dodgers staff. Kochanowicz fell to 2-3 with a 4.56 ERA ahead of a start next week against the A’s.
  • LAA Shortstop #9
Batting sixth once again, Zach Neto had one of the Angels’ two hits and two of their four walks Friday in a loss to the Dodgers.
Batting Neto sixth certainly wasn’t the difference between winning and losing a 6-0 game tonight, but this is still some nonsense from novice manager Kurt Suzuki. At .343, Neto is second on the Angels in OBP. He ought to be hitting ahead of Mike Trout and not Josh Lowe.
  • LAD Catcher #68
Dalton Rushing went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Friday against the Angels.
Rushing was incredible in his first handful of starts. but he’s now 7-for-43 with no extra-base hits since Apr. 21. The Dodgers probably won’t be so eager to try to find ways to squeeze him into the lineup until he heats up again.

Clay Holmes was diagnosed with a fractured fibula after being drilled by a 111.1 mph line drive off the bat of Spencer Jones in the fourth inning.
Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the game that Holmes will be out “for a long time”. It’s another massive blow to the Mets’ rotation as Holmes had been exceptional so far this season. Expect him to land on the injured list officially on Saturday.

Ildemaro Vargas went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI on Friday evening as the Diamondbacks vanquished the Rockies 9-1 at Coors Field.
The 34-year-old breakout star opened the scoring with an RBI single off of Kyle Freeland in the first. He then came around to score on a two-run single off the bat of Gabriel Moreno. Vargas then added an RBI single in the fourth that extended his club’s lead to 7-1. He also singled in the seventh and scored on an RBI double by Moreno. He’s having a dream season offensively, slashing .347/.369/.576 with seven homers and 30 RBI through his first 151 plate appearances on the season.
