The relief prospect will be shut down for a few days. Melotakis entered camp as a long shot to win an Opening Day roster spot and the oblique injury certainly won’t help his chances.

Tigers optioned INF Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo.

Jung has had a couple of stints with the big league club in the past week, but he’ll take the shuttle back to Toledo with Zack Short returning on Friday. Jung, 25, has hit just .167 (1-for-6) with zero RBI and one run scored in his limited action with the Tigers this season.

Zack Short

DET Shortstop #38

Tigers signed INF Zack Short to a one-year contract.

Short had been designated for assignment earlier in the week and elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo. He’ll head right back to the Tigers though and will start at shortstop on Friday evening against Kris Bubic and the Royals.

Logan O'Hoppe

LAA Catcher #14

Logan O’Hoppe (wrist) hit on the field and caught off of a machine on Friday without any issues.

The 26-year-old backstop is progressing nicely in his recovery from a fracture in his left wrist. O’Hoppe noted that the real test will be catching full bullpen sessions and hitting off of velocity. If all continues to go well, he could be looking at a return to the Angels before the end of May.

Spencer Jones

NYY Center Fielder #78

Spencer Jones will serve as the Yankees’ designated hitter and will bat sixth in his MLB debut against the Brewers on Friday evening in Milwaukee.

The dynamic 24-year-old finally gets his shot to put his power and speed on display at the big league level. He draws a tough first assignment though, having to take on Brewers’ right-hander Jacob Misiorowski. He’ll need to make a very strong initial impression, or he’ll be at risk of a return trip to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once Giancarlo Stanton (calf) is ready to return.

Justin Verlander

DET Starting Pitcher #35

Justin Verlander (hip) is scheduled to throw a live bullpen session on Saturday.

It sounds like the 43-year-old right-hander is finally making tangible strides towards a potential return. If all goes well with Saturday’s session, he could be cleared for a minor league rehab start. Given the plethora of injuries that the Tigers are battling in their rotation at the moment, they could use Verlander back as soon as possible.

Jeremy Peña

HOU Shortstop #3

Jeremy Peña (hamstring) is set to run the bases in Cincinnati on Saturday or Sunday.

If all goes well there, the 28-year-old infielder will then be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. Peña has been sidelined since early April due to a hamstring strain. He should only need a couple of games to get his timing back, with the expectation that he could potentially be ready to rejoin the Astros’ lineup next weekend.

Ben Rice

NYY 1st Baseman #22

Ben Rice (hand) returned to the Yankees’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The 27-year-old slugger had missed each of the team’s previous four games due to a bruised left hand that he suffered while fielding a pickoff attempt from Max Fried over the weekend. He’s starting at first base and is slotted in his customary second slot in the Yankees’ lineup against Brewers’ flame-throwing right-hander Jacob Misiorowski.

Alec Bohm

PHI 3rd Baseman #28
Alec Bohm is not in the Phillies’ starting lineup for the third consecutive game on Friday night against the Rockies.

Bohm has been struggling mightily at the dish, so giving him a few days to clear his head isn’t the worst idea. Phillies’ manager Don Mattingly has already said that Bohm will be back in there on Saturday. Edmundo Sosa will start in his place at third base on Friday evening and will bat eighth against Rockies’ right-hander Chase Dollander.

Gavin Hollowell

CHC Relief Pitcher #46

Cubs optioned RHP Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs needed to free up a spot in their bullpen for the return of Ethan Roberts (finger) on Friday and unfortunately for Hollowell he was the odd man out. The 28-year-old hurler appeared in just one game during his time with the Cubs, giving up two runs (10.80 ERA) on two hits and four walks (3.60 WHIP) over his 1 2/3 innings. He’ll continue to function as extra bullpen depth at Triple-A Iowa and should get another shot with the Cubs at some point over the summer.

Ethan Roberts

CHC Relief Pitcher #39

Cubs activated Ethan Roberts from the 15-day injured list.

The 28-year-old right-hander had been shelved since April 14 due to a right middle finger laceration. He’ll help to bolster a Cubs’ bullpen that has been absolutely decimated by injuries this season. Gavin Hollowell was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.
