Troy Melton (elbow) looked sharp during his second minor league rehab start at Single-A Lakeland on Friday, striking out five batters over three perfect innings.

Melton needed just 27 pitches (22 strikes) to record nine outs on Friday, as he was in complete command throughout. His fastball averaged 95.4 mph and topped out at 96.4 while he generated nine whiffs in just 19 swings. That’s mighty impressive. He’s not eligible to join the Tigers until the end of May, but barring any setbacks he’ll be a very welcomed addition to a pitching staff that could use an influx of talent.

Dodgers recalled RHP Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

With Tyler Glasnow (back) heading to the injured list, Gervase will provide a fresh arm in the bullpen for at least a couple of days. The 25-year-old hurler holds a 3.65 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and a 17/9 K/BB ratio across 12 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season.

Tyler Glasnow

LAD Starting Pitcher #31

Dodgers placed RHP Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list with lower back spasms.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts came out earlier in the afternoon and noted that it was unlikely Glasnow would require a trip to the injured list, but it appears as they’ve decided to proceed out of an abundance of caution instead. The expectation is that Glasnow will be ready to return as soon as he’s eligible or shortly thereafter. Paul Gervase was recalled from Triple-A OKC to take his place on the active roster.

LAD Starting Pitcher #31

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that Tyler Glasnow (back) is unlikely to require a trip to the injured list.

An MRI on the injured back of the 32-year-old hurler revealed “nothing really significant” according to Roberts. The team is not currently considering a stint on the injured list, but they’ll wait and see how he progresses before determining when exactly he’ll slot back into the club’s starting rotation.

Nick Yorke

PIT 3rd Baseman #38

Pirates recalled INF/OF Nick Yorke from Triple-A Indianapolis.

The versatile 24-year-old will return to add an extra bat to the Pirates’ bench with Jake Mangum (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Yorke has hit just .221/.308/.309 with one homer and six RBI in 78 plate appearances with the Bucs this season.

Jake Mangum

PIT Left Fielder #28

Pirates placed OF Jake Mangum on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 6, with a left hamstring strain.

Mangum was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup due to the hamstring issue and was feeling even worse on Friday, so the Pirates felt it was prudent to place him on the injured list. Nick Yorke was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move to take his place on the Pirates’ active roster.

Caleb Thielbar

CHC Relief Pitcher #24

Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.

The 39-year-old southpaw is working his way back from a left hamstring strain. He’ll repeat the process again on Sunday and then progress to a full bullpen early next week. If all goes well, he could be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment the following week. Barring any setbacks along the way, Thielbar should be able to return to the Cubs’ bullpen before the month of May is through.

ATL Left Fielder #28

Braves sent OF José Azocar outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Azocar was designated for assignment earlier in the week but passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra outfield depth for the Braves at Triple-A Gwinnett. The 29-year-old went hitless in two at-bats and stole a base during his limited action with the big league club.

Hunter Brown

HOU Starting Pitcher #58

Hunter Brown (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen over the weekend and is anxious to get back on the mound again.

The 27-year-old right-hander is doing well in his recovery so far and is counting down the days until he’s able to get back on the mound again. We still have yet to hear from the Astros on a potential timeline for his return, but based on his current trajectory it’s looking like he won’t be back until sometime in June.

Luis Gil

NYY Starting Pitcher #81

Luis Gil was placed on the injured list at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder.

Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone noted that Gil won’t throw for at least the next three weeks due to the issue. Boone also clarified that this is a new injury and not something that that was causing his poor performance during his time with the Yankees.
