USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that A.J. Hinch is the “No. 1 candidate” for the Tigers’ managerial opening.

Detroit is said to be considering a long list of names for the gig, including Braves catching instructor Sal Fasano, Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin, Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza, Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames, Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol, Pirates bench coach Don Kelly, Dodgers first base coach George Lombard, Cubs third base coach Will Venable, and Athletics quality control coach Mark Kotsay, but Hinch is apparently the leading man, and the Tigers could now move quickly to work out a deal with him after the White Sox named Tony La Russa as their new manager on Thursday. Hinch was said to be in consideration for the job in Chicago, but Nightengale notes that he never actually got an interview.

Orioles transferred RHP Ryan Helsley to the 60-day injured list.

Helsley is still in the process of resting before he begins to build back up. The good news is that his UCL ligament itself is intact and he’s only dealing with inflammation, but he’s far from being out of the woods yet. This move clears a spot on the Orioles’ 40-man roster for the addition of Sam Huff on Sunday.

The 32-year-old right-hander has been shelved since undergoing an internal brace procedure last June and is finally ready to contribute at the big league level once again. Tatsuya Imai will be pushed back to Tuesday with Peter Lambert getting the ball for Wednesday’s series finale.

Padres activated LHP Wandy Peralta from the bereavement list.

The 34-year-old southpaw rejoins the Padres’ bullpen for Sunday’s series finale against the Royals. Padres designated RHP Ron Marinaccio for assignment.

Marinaccio has made 33 appearances out of the Padres’ bullpen this season, registering a 4.79 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 38/18 K/BB ratio over 47 innings of work. With so many teams looking for bullpen help, it’s possible that he could attract interest on waivers.

Brito was just recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday to add an extra arm to the bullpen, but he’ll head back to Triple-A with Randy Vásquez returning from the injured list on Sunday. He’ll stay ready at Triple-A El Paso until he’s needed once more.

Christian Walker (hip) was held out of the Astros’ starting lineup for Sunday’s tilt against the Orioles.

Walker made an early exit from Saturday’s game after sustaining the injury while swinging the bat. He was able to participate in drills on the field prior to Sunday’s game though and isn’t expected to require a trip to the injured list, so he’s considered day-to-day. LaMonte Wade Jr. will start in his place at first base and bat cleanup for the Astros on Sunday.

Jeremy Peña (hamstring) is not in the Astros’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Orioles.

The good news is that Peña feels much improved after exiting Saturday’s game with a right hamstring cramp and isn’t expected to require a trip to the injured list. Nick Allen will start in his place at shortstop and will bat ninth for the Astros against Brandon Young and the Orioles on Sunday afternoon in Houston.
