Giants LHP prospect Matt Mikulski struck out seven over five innings of one-run baseball for Low-A San Jose on Wednesday.
Mikulski gave up three hits and issued two walks. It’s been an up-and-down first full professional season for the left-hander, as he currently has a 4.37 ERA and 23/7 K/BB ratio over his six starts with the Low-A Giants. Selected out of Fordham with the 50th overall pick last summer, Mikulski has two plus pitches in his fastball and slider, and his change isn’t far behind. There’s no questioning the stuff, but he has some issues repeating his delivery, and the command needs significant work; one of the reasons he’s still in Low-A as a 23-year-old. If the command can reach average he could be a starter, but if not, Mikulski has a chance to be a quality option in relief. The former has a lot more fantasy potential than the latter.
