Angels hired Marcus Thames as their next hitting coach.
Thames joins manager Phil Nevin’s staff for the upcoming 2023 season and will replace Jeremy Reed as the team’s hitting coach. The team also announced that pitching coach Matt Wise will be returning next year. Thames served as the Marlins’ hitting coach last year and previously coached alongside Nevin with the Yankees from 2018 until 2021.

Diamondbacks designated OF Alek Thomas for assignment.
Cubs would be 'in shambles' without Imanaga
James Schiano discusses Shota Imanaga's performance against the Cincinnati Reds and how the pitcher has shaken off a rough end to the 2025 season.
  • AZ Left Fielder #73
Diamondbacks selected the contract of OF Ryan Waldschmidt from Triple-A Reno.
Alek Thomas goes to make room. Waldschmidt, 23, will get his chance after just 34 games in Triple-A in which he hit .289/.400/.477 with three homers and six steals. His strikeout rate was 24.4 percent, which is big jump from his mark of 17.6 percent between High-A and Double-A last year. He’s pretty interesting for fantasy purposes right away, but odds are that he’s not ready just yet. His hard-hit rate in Triple-A was a modest 33 percent.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #55
Royals placed LHP Cole Ragans on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 7, with a left elbow impingement.
Ragans, who left Wednesday’s game after three innings, was hoping to avoid the IL stint, but he’ll miss at least two starts now. Stephen Kolek will take his rotation spot. Ragans is 1-4 with a 4.84 ERA this season.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #32
Royals recalled RHP Stephen Kolek from Triple-A Omaha.
Kolek was sent down after giving up three runs over six innings in a spot start Wednesday, but now he’s in the rotation with Cole Ragans going down. He’ll likely start Tuesday or Wednesday against the White Sox. If he performs well, there’s a chance he could retain a spot after Ragans returns.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #64
Royals recalled RHP Steven Cruz from Triple-A Omaha.
Cruz surrendered four homers and eight runs over five innings in his first stint with the Royals this season. He’ll rejoin the bullpen.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #61
Royals optioned RHP Eric Cerantola to Triple-A Omaha.
Cerantola made two appearances in two days with the Royals, walking four and giving up three runs in three innings. Now he’s going back down in exchange for a fresh arm.
  • SEA 3rd Baseman #33
Mariners activated INF/OF Brendan Donovan from the 10-day injured list.
Donovan had been out since Apr. 18 with a groin strain. His return should send Leo Rivas to the bench and J.P. Crawford back down to the bottom third of Seattle’s lineup.
  • SEA Catcher #5
Mariners optioned C Jhonny Pereda to Triple-A Tacoma.
The Mariners must be confident that Cal Raleigh is ready to resume catching regularly. Pereda was 2-for-5 while helping to fill in for him behind the plate this week.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #92
Guardians recalled RHP Franco Aleman from Triple-A Columbus.
Aleman had yet to allow an earned run and had struck out 18 in 12 innings as a reliever at Columbus. The 2021 10th-round pick out of Florida will be making his major league debut.
  • CLE Relief Pitcher #75
Guardians designated RHP Connor Brogdon for assignment.
With his velocity down a bit from last year, Brogdon had given up five homers in 15 1/3 innings, leaving him with a 5.28 ERA. Still, since he’s making only $900,000 on his deal with the Guardians, someone might pick him up off waivers.
