Amid a report of Pete Alonso seeking a 10-year deal in negotiations with the Mets, the team today issued a released that stated contract talks would be private.
GM Billy Eppier said in a statement: “While we understand the media and public interest in player contract situations, we strongly believe in keeping those conversations private. Any circulating reports do not accurately reflect our conversations with Pete.” We’re not sure why the Mets felt the need to acknowledge the report at all, but it’ll surely get more attention now. 10 years for Alonso isn’t likely to happen, but it might not be outlandish if it’s at a reduced rate to help with luxury tax issues.
