Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports that shortstop Javier Báez will not exercise the opt-out clause in his contract with the Tigers.
There had been some speculation that the 30-year-old would opt-out due to reports that he wasn’t quite happy in Motown, but ultimately, he’ll stick with the four years and $98 million remaining on his contract with the Tigers. Báez flailed valiantly at many pitches during the 2023 season, culminating in a cringe-inducing .222/.267/.325 slash line with only nine homers, 59 RBI, 12 stolen bases and a 125/24 K/BB ratio in his 547 plate appearances.
