Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) is scheduled to play catch on Saturday.

Woodruff had a minor procedure done on Tuesday to have a cyst drained from his shoulder. If all goes well with that session, he’ll progress to a bullpen session and then to a simulated game. The 33-year-old hurler is in great spirits and is ready to get to work as soon as possible in order to return to the Brewers’ rotation as quickly as possible.

Tigers signed RHP Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league contract.

The 34-year-old hurler elected free agency from the Mets after he was sent outright to Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the week. Given his experience and veteran moxie, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get an opportunity to pitch out of a depleted Tigers’ bullpen in relatively short order.

Blaze Alexander was scratched from the Orioles’ starting lineup on Friday due to right calf tightness.

Weston Wilson will replace him in the Orioles’ lineup and will bat ninth against Jacob Lopez and the Athletics on Friday night. Alexander is considered day-to-day.

Luis Arraez (thumb) returned to the Giants’ starting lineup for Friday night’s series opener against the Pirates.

Arraez missed the team’s previous two games due to a minor thumb injury. The 29-year-old comes into play on Friday slashing .316/.340/.398 with zero homers, 11 RBI and four stolen bases on the season. He’ll start at second base and bat second against Pirates’ right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski.

Ryan Waldschmidt

AZ Left Fielder #73
Ryan Waldschmidt is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Mets.

It’s possible that due to travel Waldschmidt wasn’t going to be there in time on Friday or that the Diamondbacks didn’t want him to debut against Mets’ right-hander Nolan McLean, but either way it’s a surprise that the 23-year-old isn’t in there for his debut after being promoted from Triple-A Reno on Friday. Jorge Barrosa will start in center field and bat ninth for the Diamondbacks on Friday evening.

Robert Garcia

TEX Relief Pitcher #62

Robert Garcia (shoulder) told reporters on Friday that he still feels some discomfort in his shoulder, though he is seeing improvement each time that he throws.

The 29-year-old southpaw played catch from a distance of 80 feet on Friday. He’s still got plenty of hurdles to clear before he’s able to rejoin the Rangers’ bullpen. It would be surprising to see him back in the mix before the end of May.

Gabriel Arias

CLE Shortstop #13

Guardians’ skipper Stephen Vogt told reporters on Friday that Gabriel Arias (hamstring) has “hit a little snag” in his recovery from a left hamstring strain.

It’s unclear exactly what that entails, but Vogt noted that Arias is going to be sidelined a bit longer than his original estimate of 4-to-8 weeks. The 26-year-old infielder has been shelved since April 9.

Moisés Ballesteros

CHC Catcher #25
Moises Ballesteros is not in the Cubs’ starting lineup for Friday’s matchup against the Rangers.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 22-year-old slugger. Ballesteros has been an integral cog in the Cubs’ lineup this season, slashing .280/.343/.527 with six homers and 19 RBI across 105 plate appearances. Michael Conforto will function as the team’s designated hitter and will bat second against right-hander Kumar Rocker.

Tigers optioned INF Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo.

Jung has had a couple of stints with the big league club in the past week, but he’ll take the shuttle back to Toledo with Zack Short returning on Friday. Jung, 25, has hit just .167 (1-for-6) with zero RBI and one run scored in his limited action with the Tigers this season.

Tigers signed INF Zack Short to a one-year contract.

Short had been designated for assignment earlier in the week and elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo. He’ll head right back to the Tigers though and will start at shortstop on Friday evening against Kris Bubic and the Royals.
