Royals signed RHP Luis Cessa to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The deal presumably includes an invitation to spring training, but that wasn’t included in the Royals’ official announcement. The 31-year-old righty struggled mightily in seven appearances (six starts) last season for the Reds before ultimately bouncing around at the Triple-A level between the Rockies and Nationals to close out the year. He’ll presumably compete in spring training for a spot on Kansas City’s season-opening roster.

Mets optioned 1B/OF Eric Wagaman to Triple-A Syracuse.
Well that was a short stay for Wagaman, who heads back to Triple-A Syracuse after joining the Mets for Thursday’s contest against the Nationals. He did not make an appearance in that game. Andy Ibáñez, who was claimed off of waivers from the Athletics on Thursday, will take his spot on the Mets’ active roster.
Rutschman putting up 'star caliber' statistics
James Schiano breaks down Adley Rutschman's performance in his six games since returning for the Orioles from the IL, in which he has put up an impressive performance with four home runs and 14 RBIs.

Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch told reporters on Friday that Will Vest “isn’t 100 percent”, though he failed to elaborate on what type of injury or illness may be plaguing the 30-year-old right-hander.
That explains why Vest hasn’t appeared in a game since Sunday. It doesn’t sound like there are any plans to move him to the injured list at this time, so expect him to return at some point during their weekend series against the Rangers.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #35
Justin Verlander (hip) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session over the weekend.
It sounds like if everything goes well with that session that he’ll be cleared to face live hitters. Whether or not that’s on a minor league rehab assignment or in a controlled environment remains to be seen. The 43-year-old hurler has been sidelined since the beginning of April due to right hip inflammation.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #35
Red Sox’ interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Friday that the MRI on the injured shoulder of star southpaw Garrett Crochet came back clean.
Tracy noted that the imaging revealed nothing more than inflammation, which is the best possible news that the Red Sox and fantasy managers could hear at this time. He’ll be shut down from throwing for a few days while he builds up strength in his shoulder before he starts to ramp back up. Still no firm timetable on when they expect him to return, but it doesn’t appear to be as dire as originally feared.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #65
Orioles optioned RHP Cameron Foster to Triple-A Norfolk.
Foster provided the Orioles with a fresh arm for Thursday’s doubleheader against the Astros, but he’ll head back to Triple-A with Cade Povich joining the rotation on Friday. The 27-year-old holds a 5.87 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and a 9/6 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings in five appearances with the O’s this season. He’ll assuredly get another opportunity before the summer is through.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #37
Orioles recalled LHP Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk.
As anticipated, Povich will start on Friday evening against the Yankees in place of Trevor Rogers (illness). The 26-year-old southpaw has looked sharp in two appearances (one start) for the O’s this season, posting a 2.19 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 7/3 K/BB ratio across 12 1/3 innings. With Brandon Young struggling, Povich has the added motivation of pitching to stick in the team’s rotation once Rogers is ready to return. He’s worth a look in deeper mixed leagues.
  • BAL 2nd Baseman #82
Jeremiah Jackson is not in the Orioles’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s tilt against the Yankees.
It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for Jackson after the 26-year-old infielder after he played in both halves of Thursday’s doubleheader and clubbed a grand slam against the Astros. Blaze Alexander will start in his place at second base and bat ninth for the O’s against Will Warren and the Yankees.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Kerry Carpenter is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Rangers at Comerica Park.
As is often the case, Carpenter and Colt Keith find themselves starting on the bench against an opposing left-hander, in this case it’s MacKenzie Gore taking the hill for the Rangers. Jahmai Jones will start in his place in left field and will bat third for the Tigers on Friday evening in Motown.
  • TEX Right Fielder #24
Brandon Nimmo (hamstring) returned to the Rangers’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Tigers.
Nimmo was pulled from Wednesday’s game against the Yankees due to minor right hamstring tightness. He feels much better after an off-day though and will return to his regular post in right field. He’ll bat leadoff against Tigers’ right-hander Jack Flaherty on Friday evening in Motown.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #44
Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin reports Ryan Pepiot will undergo hip surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Kevin Cash said that Pepiot felt instability in his hip while playing catch on Monday, and it turned out that this was exactly as bad as it sounded. Pepiot finishes the year without throwing a pitch in the major leagues. The 28-year-old will attempt a comeback in 2027. Pepiot was already on the 60-day injured list.
