Matheson’s reports highlights that Palmegiani, who led the AFL in home runs this season offers “positional fit at third base, power potential and the ability to crush left-handed pitching.” The 23-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit .255/.364/.478 with 23 home runs, 93 RBI, and seven steals in 128 games across two levels, and has continued to show plus power against lefties. Matheson was quick to point out that Palmegiani is unlikely to win a spot out of spring training, but that it’s likely his name gets called at some point in 2024, much like we saw with Davis Schneider last summer.

Cole broke his toe after being hit by a pitch in late March. This is his first game activity since. He’ll likely move back up to Triple-A and resume being useful depth for the Astros by the end of April or in early May.

Goodman is off to a .264/.340/.540 start with six homers in his first 24 games. Brett Sullivan will draw a day-game-after-a-night-game start at catcher against RHP Matt Waldron.

He had a 1.09 WHIP and 4.91 ERA in six outings with Charlotte. The 27-year-old will likely only work in low leverage situations for the time being.

These things happen. The 31-year-old has a 4.5 ERA in 10 innings with the big league ballclub thus far, striking out 10 and walking seven. The journeyman has pitched for four teams since the start of the 2024 and may make it five if he opts out of an outright assignment or is claimed on waivers.

Halvorsen saved 11 games for the Rockies last year with a 4.99 ERA in 42 appearances, but has pitched for the Isotopes all season to date and would seem to be no threat to Viktor Vodnik at this time. The 26-year-old righty had a 1.80 ERA and two saves in nine appearance at Triple-A so far this year. He’ll be up while Jimmy Herget is on the paternity list.

Congratulations to the Herget household. Herget has a 1.50 ERA in 11 appearances for the Rockies thus far this year, with 11 strikeouts and just two walks. He’ll be back shortly, we assume.

Matt Shaw is getting some run in center field for the Cubbies against LHP Cristopher Sánchez. Crow-Armstrong’s power has been missing for most of April, as he’s hitting .247/.300/.333 with just one homer and five stolen bases in the early season. Worse, the Cubs have hit him eighth or ninth in his last nine starts. Crow-Armstrong had a volatile profile coming into this year and so far he’s hitting the lower end of his outcomes.

Felix Reyes, who has now hit cleanup three days in a row, is getting a start while García rests. Garcia has been a disappointment thus far, with a negative baseball-reference WAR as he hits .212/.299/.329 with two homers and one steal in his first 24 games. Reyes is at .273/.273/.545 in his first 11 plate appearances as a professional.

This is all about getting a fresh arm in the bullpen. Rangel threw three innings on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits. The Phillies will get a fresh arm up in their bullpen for the weekend, but Rangel should be back up later this season.

Hoffman has posted a 2.35 ERA and 14/4 K/BB ratio in 7 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He made his MLB debut last season, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of work. The 28-year-old has missed plenty of bats at the minor league level, so the Phillies hope that will carry over.
