Ryan Helsley fired a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday against the Yankees to record his 42nd save of the season.
Helsley got the call to protect a one-run lead in the final frame and made things interesting by surrendering a two-out double to Juan Soto, which put the potential tying run in scoring position. He managed to wriggle out of the jam by striking out red-hot Yankees backstop Austin Wells, following an intentional walk to generational superstar Aaron Judge, to preserve the victory. The hard-throwing 30-year-old righty has been among the best closers in baseball this season, converting 42 of 45 save chances to go along with a sparkling 2.34 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 64/23 K/BB ratio across 57 2/3 innings (57 appearances).
