Sawyer Gipson-Long allowed five hits and three runs with one walk and three strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Wednesday.
There was plenty of both good and bad in Gipson-Long’s first start since September 28, 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. As far as the good, his velocity was around 92-93 mph, which is just a hair below where he sat back before the injury. Also, each of his four pitches forced multiple swings-and-misses to total 12. The strength of his secondary pitches is what made him so interesting when he debuted. Yet, his command of those secondary pitches is what set him apart and that clearly wasn’t quite there yet. A couple of his changeups wound up in the heart of the plate and he was lucky those didn’t get crushed. Also, the White Sox two-run rally in the third inning was partially fueled by a hittable few sinkers. All in all, this was a fine return. Especially considering he was only able to work his way up to 70 pitches because his rehab assignment was cut short since the Tigers needed someone to replace Jackson Jobe. Gipson-Long’s next start is scheduled to come against the Orioles in Baltimore.
