Juan Mejia picked up his first major league save despite giving a run in the ninth Sunday against the D-backs.
The final play was nearly a catastrophe. Ketel Marte hit a soft popup between first and second that any of three players could have caught. Mejia wanted it most, though, and caught it while getting slammed into by first baseman Warming Bernabel. Fortunately, he held on to the ball and was fine afterwards. Mejia was closing today because Victor Vodnik had saves four of the previous five days. The Rockies have as many saves in the last week as they did over their first 45 games of the season.

Pirates designated RHP Ryan Harbin for assignment.
Harbin is currently on the 60-day IL with a lat injury and had a 4.69 ERA in 63 1/3 minor league innings last year. The Pirates needed room on the 40-man roster for Chris Devenski.
Can Phillies make playoffs after firing Thomson?
Trysta Krick and Vaughn Dalzell analyze the Phillies firing Rob Thomson and naming Don Mattingly interim manager after a 9-19 start, debating if Philadelphia is "falling apart" and sharing why they can make the playoffs.

Reds recalled RHP Luis Mey from Triple-A Louisville.
Mey has a 4.91 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 14/3 K/BB ratio in 11 innings at Triple-A this season. He has a 3.43 ERA in 21 career MLB innings.

Reds placed RHP Graham Ashcraft on the bereavement list.
We hope the best for Ashcraft and his family. He should be out for a few games and could return to the Reds’ bullpen this weekend.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #68
White Sox RHP prospect Tanner McDougal left his Triple-A start with right forearm tightness.
McDougal is the 86th-ranked prospect in all of baseball, according to Baseball America, and a consensus Top 10 prospect in the White Sox’s system. He has a 3.13 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 26/13 K/BB ratio in 23 innings at Triple-A this season. The White Sox will hope that the forearm tightness is not a precursor to a more significant injury.
  • MIA Catcher #34
Liam Hicks is starting at catcher and batting fifth on Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Hicks was a late scratch on Tuesday with an illness, but he will just miss one game and be back in the lineup. Agustin Ramirez is out of the lineup with Kyle Stowers at DH and Esteury Ruiz starting in left field and batting ninth.
  • COL 2nd Baseman #3
Willi Castro (knee) is back in the starting lineup for the Rockies on Wednesday against the Reds
Castro has missed the last four games with a knee injury, but he’ll be back in the lineup at second base and hitting fifth on Wednesday. Since a left-hander pitcher is on the mound, Edouard Julien will shift to the bench, as will Troy Johnston and Jake McCarthy, with Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle in the lineup and batting first and second, respectively.
  • LAD Catcher #16
Will Smith is out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Marlins.
It’s a standard day off for a catcher with a day game after a night game. Dalton Rushing will start at catcher and bat sixth. After a homer barrage to start the season, Rushing has gone 3-for-21 with three runs and three RBI over his last six games.
  • CHC Shortstop #7
Dansby Swanson (glute cramps) is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Padres.
Swanson should be considered day-to-day, but he was always likely to sit with a day game after a night game. Matt Shaw will start at second base and bat seventh with Nico Hoerner sliding over to shortstop. Seiya Suzuki will also get a day off, with Michael Conforto in right field and batting sixth.
  • KC 1st Baseman #9
Royals president of baseball operations JJ Picollo told reporters that he “does not expect any IL trip for Vinnie Pasquantino” (back).
Pasquantino left Tuesday’s game with lower back tightness, but it seems like the Royals are not concerned that he’ll need an extended absence. Picollo referred to Pasquantino as day-to-day for now, so he may miss a game or two this week.
  • TEX Left Fielder #36
Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Wyatt Langford “will likely be activated this weekend.”
The one hiccup could be weather, which may prevent Langford from getting the live at-bats on a rehab assignment that the Rangers are hoping for. MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry reports that “There are a number of options to work through for him to get live at-bats,” if the weather doesn’t comply, and “the weekend remains the target date.”
