Peters was designated for assignment on Tuesday. The 25-year-old made his major league debut with the Rays last season, going 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts. He hit .266/.355/.429 with 15 homers and 11 steals in his second season in Triple-A. While his approach is sound, he doesn’t offer enough defense in center or offense in a corner to project as lasting major leaguer. The White Sox, though, will have outfield at-bats available, especially if they trade Luis Robert Jr.

Hamilton will get a chance to compete for a spot in Atlanta’s bullpen, and while he’s on the 40-man roster, there’s no guaranteed cash for the 30-year-old. He was non-tendered by the Yankees after posting a 4.28 ERA over 36 appearances with a K/BB of 42/22 to go with it.

Cheng is removed from the 40-man roster after the Pirates traded for Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery and Jake Mangum on Friday evening. Cheng will now be on waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, it seems likely he’ll report back to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Luciano’s time in the Pittsburgh organization is very likely to be short, as the 24-year-old was just claimed off waivers at the beginning of December. The former top prospect could sneak through unclaimed this time, but it seems likely someone will take that chance.

Ildemaro Vargas

ARI 2nd Baseman #6

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Diamondbacks have signed Ildemaro Vargas to a minor league contract.

Vargas returns to the organization after he was designated for assignment and elected free agency. The 34-year-old will compete for a spot on the Diamondbacks’ bench to open 2026.

Rangers re-signed RHP Chris Martin to a one-year contract.

Martin will once again be a high-leverage option for the Rangers after posting an excellent 2.98 ERA and 48/8 K/BB over 42 1/3 innings across 49 appearances. The right-hander won’t be fantasy relevant unless he gains saves, and that’s far from a guarantee in 2026.

Josh Bell

MIN 1st Baseman #19

Twins signed 1B Josh Bell to a one-year, $7 million contract with a mutual option for 2027.

Bell will get a chance to be an everyday option at first base for Minnesota in 2025. There have been flashes of brilliance for the 33-year-old, but there just isn’t enough consistency — and there are too many other quality options — to suggest he has mixed league value to begin 2026.

Giants designated OF Wade Meckler for assignment.

Meckler gets the boot from the 40-man roster after the Giants made the signing of Adrian Houser official. Meckler will hit the waiver wire, and a team looking for outfield depth could make a claim. If not, he likely heads to Triple-A to begin 2026.

Jacob Melton

TB Center Fielder #31

Rays acquired OF Jacob Melton from the Astros in a three-team trade.

Melton made his MLB debut and struggled to a .420 OPS over 70 at-bats, but was solid in Triple-A with a .286/.389/.556 slash over 35 games. The 2022 second-round pick should get a chance to compete for a role with Tampa Bay this spring, but fantasy managers should wait to see how things shake out before investing. There’s definitely some upside in keeper formats.
