Gore’s career 4.19 ERA went mostly unchanged last season, but he did seem to take a step forward with his 27.2% strikeout rate while being held back by one of the game’s worst defenses and, in particular, one of its worst catching situations. Things will get quite a bit better in Texas, which offers the additional perk of boasting one of the game’s toughest ballparks for right-handed hitters to homer in the last two years. If it holds up — and it may not, as Globe Life Field really has been all over the map since opening in 2020 — it’s a particularly good match for a flyball lefty in Gore. He’ll join Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi atop the Rangers rotation, with Jack Leiter as the heavy favorite for the fourth spot and likely Jacob Latz and Kumar Rocker competing for the fifth spot. The Rangers will pay him $5.8 million this year, and he’ll also be under control for 2027 before becoming a free agent.

Ober gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out three. He fell to 7-6 with the loss. Ober hasn’t won a start since July 17 against the Cubs, a span of nine starts. He has a 4.32 ERA. Ober is lined up to face the Giants on the road next week.

Carrigg had an incredible day at the plate, starting with a base hit in the first inning. He then took Walker Buehler deep for a two-run homer in the third. Carrigg doubled in his next at-bat, then went yard again, extending the Rockies’ lead with a three-run blast off Randy Vásquez. The 24-year-old has emerged as a solid, versatile player for the Rockies, splitting time between the outfield and shortstop. He’s hitting .270/.338/.474 with 10 homers, 45 runs scored, 45 RBI, and nine steals across 327 plate appearances.

Fried gave up six hits, walked none and struck out six. He improved to 5-4 on the year with the win. Fried had his longest outing since he returned from injury in July. He has a 2.63 ERA. Fried is lined up to face the Rays at home next week.

Tatis got the scoring started right away, taking Kyle Freeland deep for a solo homer to lead off the first inning. His 23rd home run of the season went 455 feet to left field. The 27-year-old slugger is up to 18 second-half home runs after hitting just five entering the All-Star break.

Freeland gave up a leadoff homer to Fernando Tatis Jr. to start the game, then gave up a second solo homer to Luis Campusano in the second inning. Freeland got through two scoreless innings, then gave up his third solo homer to lead off the fifth, this time to Austin Hays. The home run would knock Freeland from the game at 50 pitches. It was his first start off the injured list after missing nearly a month with a neck injury. The 33-year-old left-hander will take a 6.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and a 104/28 K/BB ratio across 128 1/3 innings into a start against the Diamondbacks in Colorado next Tuesday.

Buehler stranded the bases loaded in the second inning, then gave up a two-run homer to Cole Carrigg in the third. After a scoreless fourth, Buehler gave up a two-out double in the fifth that would end his day at 92 pitches. He collected just one strikeout. The 32-year-old right-hander will take a 4.58 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 122/54 K/BB ratio across 143 1/3 innings into a start against the Marlins in San Diego on Sunday.

Lile was batting for Dylan Crews, who hit a ball 407 feet to center on the very first pitch of the bottom of the first. That, though, turned into an out. Once Cristopher Sánchez exited in the seventh, Lile hit in Crews’ place against Jonathan Bowlan and sent another ball 407 feet, but this one was about 20 feet right of Crews’ shot and sailed over the wall. It was Lile’s 21st homer of the year. He was hitting .132/.195/.263 in 11 games this month.

Seager drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single in the second inning, part of a four-run inning in which the Rangers scored all of their runs in the game. He later added a base hit in the fifth. The 32-year-old shortstop has enjoyed a hot second half, hitting .298 since the All-Star break.

Kent left a 3-3 game before the Nationals scored three times off Cristopher Sánchez in the seventh, so it was a no-decision for the rookie. He’s still 1-4 with a 6.40 ERA and an unimpressive 27/23 K/BB in 32 1/3 innings over seven turns. The Nationals will likely have him face the Tigers on Monday.

Tolman gave up three hard-hit balls, but all turned into outs, with third baseman Brady House making a jumping catch on a J.T. Realmuto liner to end the game. Tolman, who just made his MLB debut on Aug. 22, has three of the Nationals’ last four saves, and it looks like he’ll finish out the year as their primary closer.
