Giants signed INF Luis Arraez to a one-year, $12 million contract.

The deal, which was agreed to at the end of January, is official now that Arraez has passed his physical. Randy Rodriguez was placed on the 60-day injured list to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster. The 28-year-old infielder chose the Giants in large part because they were willing to let him play second base regularly, so expect them to give him plenty of runway at the position to start the season, regardless of how he performs defensively.

Garrett Cleavinger (hamstring) struggled in his first minor league rehab outing at Triple-A Durham on Sunday, giving up three runs on one hit and three walks.

Cleavinger took over with a one-run lead in the sixth inning and proceeded to walk the first two hitters that he faced before serving up a three-run blast to Jhonkensy Noel. He then issued another walk before mercifully turning the ball over to the bullpen. The Rays are going to want to see him throw strikes consistently before bringing him back.

Geraldo Perdomo is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s showdown against the Blue Jays.

Perhaps this was already a planned day off for Perdomo, but it’s odd to give the slumping infielder a breather after he went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday night against the Jays. Jose Fernandez will start in his place at shortstop and bat third for the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Brent Rooker

ATH Right Fielder #25

Athletics’ manager Mark Kotsay told reporters on Sunday that Brent Rooker (oblique) has started to move around and do some light baseball activity.

Rooker is moving around well enough that he’ll travel with the team during their upcoming road trip to Seattle and Texas to continue his rehab. He’s still without a timetable for his return but is at least making strides in the right direction now.

BOS Starting Pitcher #43

Patrick Sandoval will head to Boston to be re-examined after experiencing tightness in his biceps following his latest minor league rehab start.

That certainly doesn’t sound ideal. Sandoval gave up five runs over two innings during Tuesday’s minor league rehab start at Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox should have an update on his status and a potential timeline for his return following that evaluation.

Fernando Tatis Jr.

SD Right Fielder #23
Fernando Tatis Jr. will make another start at second base on Sunday afternoon against the Angels in Los Angeles.

It’s the third start at the position for Tatis, who is creeping closer to eligibility for fantasy purposes in leagues that require five or ten games played in-season at a position. Bryce Johnson will start in right field for the Padres and will bat ninth against Angels’ right-hander Walbert Urena on Sunday afternoon.

MIN Right Fielder #38

Matt Wallner was scratched from the Twins’ starting lineup on Sunday due to a lingering rib injury.

James Outman will start in his place and will bat ninth for the Twins against Brady Singer and the Reds on Sunday afternoon. If this continues to linger for Wallner, the Twins may ultimately opt to put him on the injured list to make sure it fully heals.

Reid Detmers will have his next start pushed back from Sunday to Monday.

The Angels had an opening to fill in their rotation and they’ll fill the void by having Walbert Urena take the ball on Sunday against the Padres. Unfortunately, it costs Detmers a two-start week this week, but he’ll now be lined up to make two starts (vs. Blue Jays, at Royals) at the expense of Jack Kochanowicz.

Royce Lewis

MIN 3rd Baseman #23

Royce Lewis (knee) is expected to return from the injured list on Tuesday.

He’ll play in his second minor league rehab game at Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday. Both teams are off on Monday, so as long as he checks out alright after Sunday’s game, the expectation is that the oft-injured third baseman will be cleared to rejoin the Twins on Tuesday.

Kevin McGonigle

DET Shortstop #7

Kevin McGonigle is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s battle against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

McGonigle had started each of the team’s previous eight games and 20 of their first 21. He’ll get a well-deserved breather with left-hander Garrett Crochet toeing the slab for the Red Sox. Expect the 21-year-old phenom to still make an appearance off the bench in a key late-game situation if needed. On the season, he’s slashing .312/.411/.481 with one homer, nine RBI, one stolen base and an elite 11/13 K/BB ratio through his first 90 plate appearances in the big leagues.
