It’ll be veteran Jeff McNeil opening the season as the Athletics’ starting second baseman with Andy Ibáñez occupying a versatile bench role. Gelof endured an injury-shortened campaign last year and continues to be plagued by contact issues. There’s enough power/speed combo upside to keep him relevant in deeper fantasy leagues but he needs to scale back the strikeouts to be impactful again.

Trevor Story is not in Boston’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Braves.

Hitting .206/.244/.303 despite 41 games played with just three homers and four steals, it makes sense to plead caution on dropping Story in fantasy because he had a similarly poor stretch to start last season. Shortstop also hasn’t had many non-obvious pickups waiting in the wings to displace him this year. Perhaps a day off will help him get right — playing everyday certainly hasn’t yet.

The Brew Crew needed the spot for tonight’s starter, Coleman Crow, but Fitzpatrick should be back in due time after posting a 1.59 ERA in his four major league appearances this season.

Brewers recalled RHP Coleman Crow from Triple-A Nashville.

He’ll start tonight against the Twins. Crow allowed two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Marlins earlier this year in his MLB debut and the 25-year-old makes a decent stream against the Twins.

Nick Gonzales is not in Pittsburgh’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Phillies.

It’s the second-straight absence for Gonzales, who appears to be losing out to Jared Triolo of late. He’s hit .315/.380/.364 in 36 games started, including .333/.393/.382 against right-handers, so we’re a little surprised the Pirates have pulled back on him even if he’s no power hitter.

DJ Herz

WSH Starting Pitcher #77

DJ Herz (elbow) threw to live hitters for the first time since Tommy John surgery on Friday.

Herz missed all of the 2025 season and is trying to find his way back to the mound late in the 2026 season after undergoing a traditional Tommy John surgery in April 2025. We’ll follow his rehab, but it would be surprising if he came into fantasy relevance in 2026.

CIN Center Fielder #29

TJ Friedl isn’t in Cincinnati’s starting lineup on Friday against the Guardians.

That’s three of Cincinnati’s last five games that Friedl has sat in as the Reds are riding hot hand JJ Bleday, including two games against right-handed starters. If you were holding on to hope in medium-sized leagues that he could turn around a .184/.268/.270 start in his first 39 games, the Reds aren’t going to make it easy for you to hold him.

Jesse Scholtens

TB Starting Pitcher #65

Jesse Scholtens will pitch behind an opener again on Friday against the Marlins.

LHP Ian Seymour will begin the game for the Rays. Scholtens will have a better chance of snagging a win with the move, since he’s proved unable to cover five innings, and he’s best approached as a deep-league streamer for the occasion.

Yohendrick Pinango

TOR Left Fielder #46

Yohendrick Piñango is batting second and playing left field for the Blue Jays on Friday.

Piñango has batted second in all three of his starts so far since returning from Triple-A Buffalo, and while it looks like he’ll be platooned early on, he is hitting .361/.410/.417 in the early going. With the combination of hitting high in the Jays order and a good batting average, Piñango could be a deep-league thought for the desperate in the outfield.

Christian Roa

Orioles designated RHP Christian Roa for assignment.

This is the third team so far this year to DFA Roa, who had a 5.19 ERA with the Astros in a small sample before being jettisoned to the Twins and then Orioles. The league seems to have a lot of interest in fixing him, so perhaps he’ll be claimed or acquired yet again.

Eduarniel Núñez

Orioles acquired RHP Eduarniel Núñez from the Athletics for cash considerations.

Núñez, who had been DFA’d, was an up-down reliever for the Athletics and Padres last year, compiling a 7.11 ERA in 10 appearances over 12 2/3 innings while walking 11. He had a 5.56 ERA in nine appearances at Triple-A Las Vegas so far this year, and the 26-year-old will likely report to Triple-A Norfolk for the Orioles.
