Jack Flaherty was charged with five runs over four innings on Saturday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
Flaherty continues to struggle throwing strikes and working through opposing lineups a third time. He was all over the place against his former team in this one, throwing just 47 of 86 pitches for strikes while handing out four walks and hitting three batters. He finished with six strikeouts but was unable to complete five frames against an underwhelming Cardinals lineup. He’ll bring a lackluster 7.56 ERA into a road tilt against the Twins on Thursday afternoon.

Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy told reporters after Thursday’s game that the team would make a decision on Friday as to whether or not Christian Yelich will require another trip to the injured list.
Yelich was just activated from the injured list on Tuesday after missing a month’s worth of action due to a groin strain. He then experienced tightness in his back during his return to action and has found himself on the bench for the next two contests. The Brewers can ill afford to play shorthanded for an extended period of time, so if it looks like he won’t be ready to go by the end of the weekend, expect him to make a return trip to the injured list.

  • SEA Right Fielder #20
Luke Raley went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in the Mariners’ 8-3 defeat of the Astros on Thursday.
Raley also had 105- and 98-mph lineouts to go along with his 102-mph homer and 108-mph groundball single today. That ups his hard-hit rate to 57.1 percent. As a platoon guy, he doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify for leaderboards, but only six hitters have better hard-hit rates this season (Munetaka Murakami, James Wood, Oneil Cruz, Nick Kurtz, Ben Rice and Michael Harris II).
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #58
Luis Castillo notched his first win of the year after allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings versus the Astros.
With his velocity up about one mph from his season average, Castillo limited the damage to a Yordan Alvarez solo homer through five, but he gave up a two-run double to Braden Shewmake before exiting in the sixth. Castillo moved to 1-4 with a 6.34 ERA in nine starts. He’s supposed to piggyback with Bryce Miller next time through, but we don’t yet know what form that will take. That outing against the White Sox is scheduled for Tuesday.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #50
Mike Burrows was tagged for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings by the Mariners on Thursday.
Burrows allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out four while giving up two homers for the third time this season. He’d shown improvement of late, amassing a 2.50 ERA in his previous three starts against the Yankees, Red Sox and Reds, but this leaves him 2-5 with a 5.72 ERA overall. With the Astros stretching out Kai-Wei Teng, Burrows might be a candidate for demotion if he has another outing like this next week against the Twins.
  • SEA 3rd Baseman #33
Brendan Donovan went 3-for-5 with a triple and a double against the Astros in Thursday’s victory.
Donovan had two at-bats to get the homer he needed for a cycle, but he produced a groundout and a 231-foot flyout. The triple came in his second at-bat and was his first since 2024. He’s batting .278/.396/.468 with three homers in his 96 plate appearances this season.
  • HOU Designated Hitter #44
Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-5 with a homer and a walk versus the Mariners on Thursday.
Alvarez’s blast off Luis Castillo was his 14th of the year. He’s second in the majors with a 1.071 OPS, tied for fifth in homers and eighth in both average (.321) and RBI (30).
  • HOU Center Fielder #0
Brice Matthews finished 0-for-4 in the loss to the Mariners on Thursday.
Matthews singled twice last night, but those are his only hits over 23 at-bats in his last six games. He also hasn’t drawn a walk since May 4, leaving him at .196/.252/.373 for the season. With Jake Meyers on a rehab assignment, Matthews could be looking at a return to Triple-A next week.
  • WSH Relief Pitcher #48
Nationals signed LHP Alex Young to a minor league contract.
Young, who hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2024, is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He’ll report to the Nationals’ affiliate in the Florida Coast League for the time being until he’s ready to make the move to Triple-A Rochester. It’s a nice depth signing for the Nationals.
  • LAD Shortstop #50
Mookie Betts is absent from the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Thursday’s matchup against the Giants.
This was a planned day off for the dynamic 33-year-old as they ease him back into action following his return from the injured list. Miguel Rojas will start at shortstop and bat ninth for the Dodgers on Thursday evening.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #17
Shohei Ohtani is not in the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Thursday night’s showdown against the Giants.
It’s a planned day off for Ohtani after he pitched seven innings against the Giants on Wednesday evening. Will Smith will serve as the team’s designated hitter and leadoff hitter in his absence on Thursday while Dalton Rushing starts behind the dish for the Dodgers.
