Mookie Betts will undergo an MRI on his back after leaving Saturday’s win over the Nationals.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called the injury more “moderate than significant” but it sounds like Betts will miss at least the next couple of days. Whether or not this will require a stint on the injured list will largely be determined by the results of the imaging. Miguel Rojas will likely get the starts at short as long as Betts is out.

The Giants needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the return of Daniel Susac on Friday and it looks like Koss drew the short straw this time around. The 28-year-old infielder is just 1-for-14 (.071) in his limited action with the Giants this season.

Susac will return as expected after missing more than three weeks of action due to right elbow neuritis. The 25-year-old backstop has hit a blistering .478 (11-for-23) with zero homers and five RBI in his first 24 plate appearances with the Giants.

Blake Snell

LAD Starting Pitcher #7

Blake Snell was scratched from his scheduled start against the Angels on Friday night.

No word yet on the reason for the late scratch, but the Dodgers now plan to go with Will Klein as an opener in what will be a bullpen game. Snell has made just one start since returning from the injured list, giving up five runs (four earned) over three innings in a loss to the Braves on Saturday. Stay tuned, as the Dodgers should have an update on his status shortly.

Josh Smith

TEX 2nd Baseman #8

Rangers utilityman Josh Smith, who is on the injured list with wrist and glute injuries, has been hospitalized due to viral meningitis.

Yikes. Smith is expected to remain in a Dallas-area hospital for the next 7-10 days while he recovers. There’s obviously no clear timeline on when he may be able to return to action, the important thing now is for him to focus on his health.

Brandon Woodruff

MIL Starting Pitcher #53

Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) came away pleased after throwing 25 pitches during a bullpen session on Thursday.

The 33-year-old right-hander will repeat the exercise on Monday, then if all goes well, he’ll progress to a simulated game. Depending on how quickly he ramps up, it’s possible that Woodruff could be able to return to the Brewers’ rotation without requiring a minor league rehab assignment.

Roman Anthony

BOS Left Fielder #19

Roman Anthony (wrist) had his splint and brace removed and was able to play catch on Friday for the first time since landing on the injured list.

There’s still no clear target date for his return, but the 22-year-old budding superstar continues to make small strides in the right direction. He has been sidelined since May 4 due to a right wrist sprain.

Gerrit Cole

NYY Starting Pitcher #45
Gerrit Cole (elbow) will make his next minor league rehab start on Saturday.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday that Cole is still likely to make an additional rehab start after Saturday’s outing and the team won’t accelerate his timeline in an effort to replace the injured Max Fried (elbow). Cole threw 69 pitches over 4 1/3 innings his last time out and should get to around 80 pitches during Saturday’s start.

Freddie Freeman is not in the Dodgers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Angels.

It’s nothing more than a routine night off for the 36-year-old slugger. Dalton Rushing will start in his place at first base and will bat eighth for the Dodgers against Angels’ right-hander Jack Kochanowicz.

Byron Buxton

MIN Center Fielder #25

Twins’ manager Derek Shelton told reporters on Friday that while Byron Buxton was held out of the lineup for a second consecutive game, he’s considered day-to-day.

Shelton noted that Buxton was “feeling better” and said he thought that they were heading in the right direction. It sounds like he should be able to avoid the injured list but may need a couple of extra days before he’s ready to return.

LAA Relief Pitcher #44

Ben Joyce told reporters on Friday that he underwent a precautionary MRI on his shoulder that came back clean.

Joyce has been struggling with his command during his minor league rehab assignment, and it sounds like some shoulder soreness may be the cause of it. He’ll slow down his rehab process but won’t completely stop throwing. As of now, the timeline for his return remains completely up in the air.
