Giants ‘highly impressed’ by rookie WR Fields

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Giants have been “highly impressed” by WR Malachi Fields.

Fowler goes so far as to say there are “shades” of former Giants WR Plaxico Burress “as far as style.” This is, perhaps, technically a true statement, but almost assuredly hyperbolic. Fields, a third-round rookie, landed on a depth chart chock-full of speedy role players. He brings a unique skill set with his 6'4/218 frame and jump-ball abilities. Carving out a role this season is possible, but not a given.

Fields saw a season-high eight targets, but caught just two of those passes for 19 yards. The Giants passing game behind Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely isn’t productive for fantasy purposes. Darnell Mooney had a carry for 20 yards while Charlie Jones caught 2-of-3 passes for 66 yards. Fields is the best option past Nabers and Likely, but he can be left on fantasy benches for Week 7 against the Texans.

Fields has now caught exactly two passes in each of his first four NFL appearances. His 12-yard touchdown was the first of his career. Jameis Winston was flushed from the pocket and found Fields on the run. The duo later connected on a similar play for a non-scoring 40-yard grab. Today was the first time Winston showed any signs of life in place of Jaxson Dart, though Fields is still going to be a tough sell WR4 in this depressed offensive environment.

Fields hasn’t caught more than two passes in a game this year. He finished third on the team in targets in Week 3. Fields is on the field plenty, he just isn’t earning that many opportunities. He is not a viable fantasy option for Week 4.
  • NYG Wide Receiver #88
Fields struggled alongside the rest of the Giants in a game played mostly with backup quarterback Jameis Winston under center. Jaxson Dart departed after the team’s first possession with what looked like an MCL sprain based on the mechanism of the injury, something that could force missed contests from the normal starter. That would position Fields in a difficult spot to return usable counting stats in the short term. He gets the struggling Titans in Week 3, where he’ll be best left on fantasy benches.

The rookie wide receiver showcased a polished all-around skillset, reinforcing offseason reports that he had locked down the WR2 role opposite Malik Nabers. His 6'4, 220-pound frame was on full display as he was continually utilized as both a down-blocker and blocker in the second level on runs, something that should allow him to continue to operate as the clear-cut WR2 for the Giants throughout his rookie campaign. That said, the box scores highlights the obvious distinction that his snap rate — he led all Giants wideouts with 50 — won’t always translate to fantasy production while playing alongside Nabers and tight end Isaiah Likely, the latter two of whom commanded 17 targets on 29 Jaxson Dart pass attempts. The good news is that he played well ahead of veterans Darnell Mooney and Odell Beckham Jr., with Mooney having 39 snaps and Beckham just 11. Fantasy managers are best off viewing Fields as a high-end stash at the end of benches for the time being.

This isn’t the first time Raanan has suggested Fields could have the inside edge as the Giants’ WR2. Earlier this month, he said the rookie third-rounder was making an “early claim” for the role, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise given the thin receiving corps the Giants are currently working with. The 6-foot-4, 220-plus-pound receiver has an excellent catch radius and made a name for himself with his ability to haul in contested targets during his days at Virginia and Notre Dame. It seems highly unlikely that Fields would make enough of an impact to be considered a reliable fantasy contributor, but he could be worth a late-round/stash in drafts to see how things unfold for him in the weeks to come.

It’s a game that The Athletic’s Dan Duggan says “strengthened his push for the No. 2 receiver job.” His touchdown pass was from Jaxson Dart, but he was one of several receivers getting first-team snaps. It’s hard to believe Fields will be relevant early in 12-team redraft leagues unless Malik Nabers suffers a setback, but he’s squarely on the fantasy radar after a big camp.

The Giants traded up to select Fields with the No. 74 overall pick in this year’s draft, adding him to a receiver room that is noticeably thin behind Malik Nabers. This isn’t the first time Fields has garnered praise from the media, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported in late July that the Giants were “highly impressed” by the hulking receiver who made a name for himself as a contested catch specialist. It’s highly unlikely that Fields will make enough of an impact as a rookie to be a viable fantasy option, but he could prove valuable as a big target in and around the end zone for the Giants this season.

Giants GM Joe Schoen recently said Fields will be the “power forward” in the team’s wide receiver corps, jumping for contested catches and blocking on the perimeter. Fields has a chance to play in year one, with speedster WR Darius Slayton coming off another sub-600-yard season. Fields warrants final-round consideration in best ball formats. Expectations must be tempered.
  • NYG Wide Receiver
Fields, a big-bodied blocker, probably has a real chance to play big snaps in his first season after the Giants traded up to get him in the third round. Giants coach John Harbaugh praised his speed (despite a 4.61 second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine) by saying “when you do the miles per hour, which we get the (GPS) tracking now, that’s fast. He tracks a lot faster ... he’s the equivalent of a mid-4.4 type 40 time. He’s running over 21 miles an hour consistently in games. He’s also got the ability to stop, drop his weight, change direction, get out of breaks. You see all that.” Fields isn’t really on the fantasy radar right now, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he became a hot waiver wire name at some point in his rookie season.

Cowboys ruled out KaVontae Turpin (ribs) for Week 7 against the Eagles.

Turpin’s absence will be felt most on special teams, with the team now forced to find a replacement on punt and kick returns. Otherwise, there is almost zero fantasy impact as the team’s WR4.

Falcons activated A.J. Terrell (groin) from injured reserve.

The Falcons have been attackable on the perimeter while playing most of the season without Terrell. Fellow cornerback C.J. Henderson is listed questionable for Week 7, but the reintegration of Terrell provides a much more difficult matchup for the injury-riddled 49ers.

Broncos activated Jonah Coleman (ankle) from injured reserve.

Coleman missed the minimum four games as he tended to an ankle injury suffered in Week 2. He led the team in snaps in that contest and could return to the primary rushing role considering the inefficient play of J.K. Dobbins in his absence, making him worthy of a start in fantasy circles in a plus matchup against the Cardinals in his first game back.

Ravens ruled out Lamar Jackson (ankle) for Week 7 against the Bengals.

Tyler Huntley will draw the start under center for the third straight game as Jackson continues to rehab a high-ankle sprain. Jackson reportedly took most of the first-team reps at practice Friday and was close to being able to play in Week 7, with the team ultimately siding with caution for their franchise quarterback. The Ravens enter a 15-game stretch in which they play three games starting in Week 8, which could have influenced their decision to hold Jackson out one more game. Expect him back for Week 8 against the Bills. His absence greatly influences the upside of the remaining skill position players considering Declan Doyle has halved his usage of play action and completely eliminated RPO with Huntley under center.

Dallas Goedert (knee) was removed from the injury report Saturday and will play against the Cowboys in Week 7.

Goedert reportedly aggravated his previous knee injury but got back on the practice field for a full session Saturday before being removed from the injury report. He could be stepping into a massive target share with both DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks ruled out. Fantasy managers can start him as an upside TE1 in a great matchup against the Cowboys in Week 7.

Saquon Barkley (hamstring) is questionable for Week 7 against the Cowboys.

Although getting in a full practice Saturday, the Eagles head into Monday’s game against the Cowboys with Barkley listed as questionable following a two-game absence. Fantasy managers have a decision considering the Eagles play in Week 7’s final game on Monday Night Football, with no clear fall back options should he be unable to play. It would seem prudent to make alternate plans at the position.

Eagles ruled out DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) for Week 7 against the Cowboys.

The Eagles will be without their top two receivers but got good news Saturday with the removal of Dallas Goedert from the injury report. Saquon Barkley is listed as questionable and appears to be a true game-time decision. Considering the low involvement of the backfield in the pass game this season, Goedert stands to benefit the most from the absences at wide receiver. He can be started as an upside TE1 in a solid on-paper matchup against the Cowboys.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Vikings plan to activate Jordan Mason (thumb) from injured reserve.

Mason came into the season as the presumed lead back in a timeshare with Aaron Jones, the latter of whom has performed as a true workhorse in Mason’s absence. Although it could take a week or two for Mason to fully regain the lead back role, his presence significantly mutes the potential of Jones. Expect a near-even split when the Vikings take on the Colts in Week 7.

Browns activated RB Dylan Sampson (knee) from injured reserve.

Sampson was limited in practice throughout the week and listed as questionable for Week 7 against the Titans. Now that he’s officially been activated from injured reserve, he’s likely to be Cleveland’s change-of-pace back behind Quinshon Judkins this week. Sampson is worth stashing on fantasy benches, but is truly just a desperation FLEX play coming off a knee injury that’s sidelined him since Week 1.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that several teams believe the Jaguars could trade WR Brian Thomas Jr.

Appearing on ESPN Saturday morning, Fowler, citing Thomas’ zero catches over the last two weeks, said something has to give in this situation. According to several teams the NFL Insider talked to, Thomas could be traded over the next few weeks. Fowler listed the Chiefs and Steelers as potentially interested teams and was emphatic that there will be suitors for Thomas. If you have Thomas in fantasy, it’s hard to imagine his value getting worse with a change of scenery. The Jaguars would appear content to roll with Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers and Travis Hunter as their top receivers in the event of a Thomas trade.
