Cyrus Allen totals seven yards on three catches

Thornton headed into the medical tent and was subsequently carted to the locker room at Tuesday’s practice. Now it’s been revealed that he suffered a hamstring strain. It’s unclear how long Thornton might be out, but his injury further opens the door for camp standout Cyrus Allen.

The good news is that Allen worked with the starters in the slot. The bad news is that he worked well into the second half in the first preseason game while leading the team in targets. He’s clearly the highest-upside stash receiver of the group, but playing deep into the first preseason game isn’t a great sign for his chances of early playing time.

Allen has been sidelined since Saturday after he suffered a shin injury during a collision with a teammate. The flashy fifth-round rookie has made a name for himself in the early part of training camp and is now back on the field following his brief injury scare. Allen’s recent training camp hype has made him an interesting dart throw in the later rounds of drafts, but it will likely take a few things breaking in his favor for him to make a meaningful fantasy impact this season.

According to Breer, Allen “might’ve been the best receiver in camp before bruising his shin.” Internally, the team apparently sees some similarities to Stefon Diggs in Allen’s “physical profile and play style.” Year after year, a Chiefs youngster soars up draftboards after turning in a promising showing in training camp. The results haven’t always matched the hype, though, particularly in recent seasons. Only time will tell if Allen is worthy of the praise he’s received — and only those willing to take the ADP plunge will benefit. He is not without risk, but Allen’s upside is worth chasing.

Allen suffered a shin injury on Saturday after colliding with a teammate. What appeared to be a serious injury at first glance was later diagnosed as a bone bruise, and Allen was listed as day-to-day. The rookie fifth-rounder has made some impressive plays at camp early on and is looking like a solid depth player in the Chiefs’ wide receiver room.

Taylor published his story on Saturday morning. Allen suffered a bone bruise in his shin a few hours later. The Chiefs’ first padded practice takes place on Monday. If Allen is ready to go, he will huddle up alongside QB Patrick Mahomes. If not, we expect the team to hold his seat until he’s ready. Per Taylor, Allen entered camp competing against Nikko Remigio and Jalen Royals for the WR4 role. Taylor states Allen has already surpassed both players, and his performance “has the Chiefs dreaming and recalculating what he could be in the NFL.” Taylor highlights Allen’s performance against man coverage and his crossing route running before noting that Chiefs receivers struggled in both departments last year. If Allen can heal up and continue making plays when pads go on, he seemingly has a chance to earn a role in the Chiefs’ offense. Stay tuned.

This is about the best case scenario for the Chiefs after Allen was carted from the field Saturday after a special teams collision. Preliminary testing revealed the knee to be intact with no associated ligament damage, leaving Allen day-to-day with what is being called a shin bruise. The fifth-round receiver is expected to make an immediate impact on special teams while providing valuable depth behind Rashee Rice in the slot.

Allen, who was the top story at Chiefs camp as recently as yesterday, ran into a teammate while playing gunner during a punt drill. The 23-year-old rookie receiver limped off the field with help from teammates before he was carted to the locker room. The fifth-round rookie from Cincinnati had been gaining momentum for a role in the offense, but that’s been put on hold until more information is known about the severity of his injury.

According to Newell, Allen “has been catching everything” thrown his way. Veteran fantasy players are all too familiar with the cool-catch storylines that send a player’s ADP rocketing upward — as well as the Chiefs’ annual rookie breakout storyline that does the same. Should we believe the hype? Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Allen must continue stacking good days once the pads come on, and “we’ll see from there.” It’s reasonable advice. Reid acknowledges that “the quarterback trusts him in there,” and WR Xavier Worthy said he is not surprised by Allen’s play after the rookie’s strong spring showings. That said, Allen, 23, is still experiencing mental gaffes. He lined up on the wrong side of the field after QB Patrick Mahomes broke the huddle on one play, and Reid also met Allen on the field at one point to offer “some subtle teaching points on how to run routes.” Allen should be rostered in dynasty formats and now warrants late-round flier treatment in best ball. Keep a close eye on him in the coming weeks.

Chiefs rookies reported for training camp on July 24, and although most veterans do not report until July 28, quarterbacks arrive early, allowing rookies to take reps with QB Patrick Mahomes. Per Taylor, Allen and Mahomes linked up for one of Sunday’s highlights, a touchdown pass thrown to the back of the end zone in 7-on-7 drills. Taylor notes that coach Andy Reid “spent a few minutes giving Allen one-on-one coaching between repetitions, too.” Is this groundbreaking news? No. But, it is positive. The fifth-round rookie was a worthwhile late-round dart throw in dynasty rookie drafts this spring, and is a player to keep an eye on this summer.
