Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy said the team is going to continue building up WR Cyrus Allen to a bigger workload “the right way.”

Apparently, that means barely using him on game day, at least in the short term. Allen played one snap in the Chiefs’ season opener, despite starting WRs Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy combining for a just 5/37/1 stat line. Bieniemy also said that Allen is “going to be a part of our success moving forward. I guarantee that.” Given Allen’s Week 1 usage, becoming fantasy-relevant could take quite some time.

You don’t say, Chad. Allen was the talk of Chiefs training camp. Beat reporters celebrated his ability to beat man coverage and win over the middle of the field — two aspects that help wide receivers thrive in fantasy. Unfortunately, Allen has logged just four offensive snaps this season. O’Shea adds that Allen is improving every day, both “fundamentally and schematically.” Good for him. The once-intriguing rookie is droppable in 12-team formats, though an in-season breakout remains possible. Theoretically.

The Chiefs let most of their starters take the field in this game and Allen wasn’t among them. He didn’t see a snap until after Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton had all left the contest. His first target didn’t come until the third quarter, and it was a drop on a high throw. The rookie rebounded with a 12-yard gain for a first down on the very next play. After playing well into the second half of the team’s final preseason game, Allen is, at best, the Chiefs’ WR4 entering the season. Despite the strong training camp, he shouldn’t be in starting fantasy lineups for Week 1.

Taylor stops short of declaring Allen a starter in three-wide receiver sets, so he is likely still stuck in the No. 4 wide receiver spot. The fifth-round rookie has at least carved out a role for himself, and Taylor dubs him “the biggest winner in camp.” Allen is a worthwhile late-round pick at this time.
  • KC Wide Receiver #13
Allen saw action through the first three quarters of play. His 29 snaps were the third-most of any Chiefs receiver, while his 23 routes run were the second-most on the day. All three of his catches came in the short areas of the field, as evidenced by the -1.7 ADOT he averaged on his three receptions, per TruMedia. One of the most hyped players of this training camp season, the rookie fifth-rounder has a 5-27-0 receiving line on 10 targets in his two preseason games thus far.

Thornton headed into the medical tent and was subsequently carted to the locker room at Tuesday’s practice. Now it’s been revealed that he suffered a hamstring strain. It’s unclear how long Thornton might be out, but his injury further opens the door for camp standout Cyrus Allen.
  • KC Wide Receiver #13
The good news is that Allen worked with the starters in the slot. The bad news is that he worked well into the second half in the first preseason game while leading the team in targets. He’s clearly the highest-upside stash receiver of the group, but playing deep into the first preseason game isn’t a great sign for his chances of early playing time.
  • KC Wide Receiver #13
Allen has been sidelined since Saturday after he suffered a shin injury during a collision with a teammate. The flashy fifth-round rookie has made a name for himself in the early part of training camp and is now back on the field following his brief injury scare. Allen’s recent training camp hype has made him an interesting dart throw in the later rounds of drafts, but it will likely take a few things breaking in his favor for him to make a meaningful fantasy impact this season.
  • KC Wide Receiver #13
According to Breer, Allen “might’ve been the best receiver in camp before bruising his shin.” Internally, the team apparently sees some similarities to Stefon Diggs in Allen’s “physical profile and play style.” Year after year, a Chiefs youngster soars up draftboards after turning in a promising showing in training camp. The results haven’t always matched the hype, though, particularly in recent seasons. Only time will tell if Allen is worthy of the praise he’s received — and only those willing to take the ADP plunge will benefit. He is not without risk, but Allen’s upside is worth chasing.

Allen suffered a shin injury on Saturday after colliding with a teammate. What appeared to be a serious injury at first glance was later diagnosed as a bone bruise, and Allen was listed as day-to-day. The rookie fifth-rounder has made some impressive plays at camp early on and is looking like a solid depth player in the Chiefs’ wide receiver room.

Taylor published his story on Saturday morning. Allen suffered a bone bruise in his shin a few hours later. The Chiefs’ first padded practice takes place on Monday. If Allen is ready to go, he will huddle up alongside QB Patrick Mahomes. If not, we expect the team to hold his seat until he’s ready. Per Taylor, Allen entered camp competing against Nikko Remigio and Jalen Royals for the WR4 role. Taylor states Allen has already surpassed both players, and his performance “has the Chiefs dreaming and recalculating what he could be in the NFL.” Taylor highlights Allen’s performance against man coverage and his crossing route running before noting that Chiefs receivers struggled in both departments last year. If Allen can heal up and continue making plays when pads go on, he seemingly has a chance to earn a role in the Chiefs’ offense. Stay tuned.

Commanders ruled out RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) for Week 6 against the 49ers.

No surprise here. Croskey-Merritt has been dealing with a groin injury since the start of the season. This week he couldn’t practice and has since been officially ruled out for the Commanders’ Monday Night Football matchup against the 49ers. Croskey-Merritt will get a two-week break with Washington on bye in Week 7. Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler figure to handle the majority of the backfield touches in his absence with White being the preferred fantasy option between the two.

Pat Freiermuth (calf) is questionable for Week 6 against the Buccaneers.

Freiermuth popped up on the injury report Saturday afternoon with a calf injury. He’s questionable for this weekend against the Buccaneers. Freiermuth would’ve been in line for a sizable workload with the Steelers down multiple wide receivers. Coming off a two touchdown performance in Week 5, fantasy managers need a backup plan in case Freiermuth is ultimately ruled out against Tampa Bay.

DK Metcalf (illness) was removed from the injury report and is expected to play against the Buccaneers in Week 6.

Good news. Metcalf missed practice Friday and was listed as questionable, but has since been removed from the injury report and is expected to play this week. With the Steelers missing Michael Pittman Jr., Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek, Metcalf could see even more targets than usual against Tampa Bay.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Ravens WR Ja’Kobi Lane (wrist) is “good to go” and should be activated for Week 6 against the Browns.

While nothing is official yet, Lane practiced in full all week, which is another good sign for his availability against the Browns this weekend. Lane was one of the most impressive rookies this offseason and preseason. Rashod Bateman isn’t on the injury report, but missed practice during the week with a shoulder. Lane could conceivably operate as the second option in the Ravens passing game behind Zay Flowers as early as this week.

Commanders beat writer Ben Standig reports RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) isn’t expected to play in Week 6 against the 49ers.

Croskey-Merritt has dealt with a groin injury all season despite playing in the Commanders’ first five games. He missed multiple practices this week and will now get two weeks off with missing the game against the 49ers ahead of Washington’s bye week. For now, expect Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler to handle the majority of the backfield touches for the Commanders.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports the Chargers have rejected trade calls and aren’t planning a fire sale.

According to Pelissero, teams have called Chargers GM Joe Hortiz, but he’s not interested in potential trade offers despite Los Angeles’ 0-5 record. The Chargers have one game left before their bye week and if they lose to the 4-0 Chiefs, falling to 0-6, this could all change. For now, the Chargers GM doesn’t want to deal, but trade calls on veteran players aren’t going to stop without a massive turnaround. Pelissero mentions Khalil Mack, Bud Dupree, Daiyan Henley, Donte Jackson, Denzel Perryman, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Tuli Tuipulotu as potential trade candidates in the final year of their contracts with the Chargers. He adds that he wouldn’t be surprised if teams that need running back or receiver help call about Keaton Mitchell, Kimani Vidal, and Quentin Johnston.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports Packers EDGE Micah Parsons (knee) still isn’t practicing.

The Packers play the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football on NBC and Peacock in Week 6, but Parsons still isn’t practicing. According to Pelissero, it’s unlikely the 27-year-old defensive end plays before Green Bay’s matchup with the Patriots in Week 9 at the earliest. The Packers’ defense has certainly struggled without Parsons, but they have enough offensive firepower to win shootouts, which only adds to the fantasy floor for Jordan Love and Green Bay’s skill players.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports Colts WR Alec Pierce (heel) is still a few weeks away from a return to game action.

No surprise here. Pierce shed his cast earlier this week, but there was also a report from the Athletic’s James Boyd that he “didn’t get the sense” Pierce was close to a return. Pelissero reports that Pierce isn’t expected to return to practice next week when he’s eligible. It’s difficult to justify holding Pierce in leagues without IR spots given the circumstances.

The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reports there’s “optimism” Baker Mayfield (thumb) will return in Week 7 against the Panthers.

Mayfield didn’t practice this week, but according to Buccaneers HC Todd Bowles he threw on Monday and was pushing to play before his “thumb swelled up on him.” It seems like Mayfield is trending in the right direction and that he could return against the Panthers in Week 7 if the swelling is no longer an issue. Jalon Daniels is starting for Tampa Bay again in Week 6 against the Steelers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Eagles aren’t planning to place QB Jalen Hurts (blood clot) on injured reserve.

While Hurts still has no timetable to return, the Eagles haven’t even discussed the possibility of placing him on injured reserve, according to Schefter. That could change as there’s still a possibility Hurts could wind up on injured reserve if that’s where the medical information leads them. Most blood clots are treated with anticoagulants (blood thinners), which would sideline Hurts for a minimum of six weeks, according to Schefter’s sources. The best-case scenario, according to Schefter, seems to be if the blood clot is minor enough that doctors could begin treatment with anti-inflammatories. Two team doctors that Schefter polled also speculated that the 28-year-old quarterback could miss six weeks. Tanner McKee is in line to start at least a few games while Hurts is out.
