Broderick Jones to compete at RT

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Broderick Jones will compete with Terence Steele for the starting right tackle job.

This is a bit surprising because the Cowboys had already had a competition for Tyler Guyton on the left side (that Guyton won), and it was assumed that Jones would come in and add to that competition. Not so fast. Steele just received a three-year contract this offseason and is on the books for a $15.2 million cap hit in 2027, so we’d be surprised if Jones won the job.

The former first-round pick has significantly underperformed his high draft capital during his four-year professional career but provides an upside-depth piece for a Cowboys team returning all five starters along the offensive line from a season ago. Jones now presumably settles in behind Terence Steele on the right side in Dallas. The remaining details of the deal were not immediately made available.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
He did say they’d be “smart” about him and where he is strength and conditioning wise, so Jones may wind up taking a longer build up. But overall, this is a fairly positive update about a player who we weren’t completely sure would play in 2026 as recently as a few months ago.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
While Jones did “a bit more” at OTAs and was at least present, he himself has said he doesn’t have a timeline to return, and the Steelers declined his fifth-year option and drafted Max Iheanachor in the first round while moving Troy Fautanu to left tackle. It doesn’t sound like there’s any guarantee that Jones suits up this season from either his words or the Steelers’ actions.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
Jones underwent surgery on his neck in March. The Steelers declined to exercise his fifth-year option early in May after spending the No. 21 overall pick on OT Max Iheanachor. Fellow Steelers OT Troy Fautanu also recently told reporters that the team wants him to move to left tackle. Jones was present at OTAs last week, but did not participate in team drills. It appears as though he will have to compete for a starting role this season. In today’s report, DeFabo shared a video of Jones doing sled work alongside OL Doug Nester, who was signed to a reserve/futures contract after being released last summer.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
This comes from an article written by Chris Harlan of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where Jones said the time continues to monitor him “day by day” as he works his way back from spinal fusion surgery. Jones was present at the Steelers’ OTAs this week but did not participate in team drills, and could face a battle for playing time with Troy Fautanu looking to move to left tackle, and rookie Max Iheanachor expected to man the right tackle position. Jones said his recovery is going well, but given the severity of the injury, it could be some time before we see him in action again.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
Jones was in uniform and participated in warm-ups, but according to The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo, he did not take part in any team drills. Jones is still working his way back from a neck injury that required a fusion surgery in March. Jones recently suffered a setback in his recovery, which likely factored into the team’s decision to decline his fifth-year option, but his presence at OTAs, even in a limited capacity, is an encouraging sign.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
Jones is recovering from a neck injury he suffered last season, which required a fusion surgery that took place in March. The decision to decline Jones’ fifth-year option likely stems from this injury, both in the short term and the long term. While some doubt has already been cast on Jones’ readiness to start this season, the Steelers likely also want to see how he holds up over the course of the season once he returns. The fourth-year tackle has started 38 regular season games for the Steelers since being drafted 14th overall by them in 2023. He’s allowed 20 sacks and 95 pressures in those games, per PFF, and earned a 59.0 pass-blocking grade last season — a career-high. Given the Steelers’ decision to select OT Max Iheanachor at No. 21 overall in this year’s draft, it’s possible they are already planning for a future that may not include Jones as their bookend left tackle.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
Jones played in just 11 games last season due to his injury and underwent fusion surgery in March. The team was already reporting that the former first-round pick may not be ready in time for training camp, but this latest setback raises his availability into further question. Schefter reports Jones will be examined later this week to determine where things stand, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Jones isn’t ready for the start of camp. Jones allowed 23 pressures and six sacks on 380 pass-blocking snaps last season, earning a PFF pass-blocking grade of 59.0.
  • DAL Tackle #78
Steele agreed to take a paycut to stay in Dallas. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he is now set to make $33 million over the next three years, down from $48.5 million. He can also make another $3 million back, presumably through incentives. The Cowboys, in return, guaranteed $22 million of his remaining money. They created roughly $13 million in cap space.
  • PIT OFFENSIVE TACKLE (SUB) #77
Steelers GM Omar Khan said last week that Jones may not be ready for camp. We now know why. The third-year tackle underwent fusion surgery to repair a neck injury he suffered in Week 12 of last season, which undoubtedly puts a giant question mark on his timeline for return. To make matters worse for Jones, the Steelers will need to decide by May 1st if they will pick up the fifth-year option for him in 2027, or if they will allow his contract to expire after 2026. Jones has started 27 of the last 28 games he has played in for the Steelers and will be 25 at the start of next season. His status will be one to monitor as we draw closer to camp.

Browns signed Jimmy Horn Jr., formerly of the Panthers.

Carolina waived Horn Jr. earlier this week after he muffed a punt in Week 1. NFL insider Jordan Schultz was first on this news, though he didn’t note whether Horn Jr. will be joining the Browns’ active roster or practice squad. We suspect the latter.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Nico Collins’ status for Week 2 against the Bengals “is in jeopardy” because of his hamstring injury.

Collins suffered the hamstring injury during yesterday’s practice and immediately met with doctors. The team doesn’t believe the issue is serious, but that’s a cold comfort for a player with an extensive history of soft tissue injuries. Kayshon Boutte and Xavier Hutchinson will take on every-down roles if Collins misses Week 2. Neither player would push past the WR4 fantasy ranks. Second-year wideout Jaylin Noel would also see more work, though the team has been reluctant to play him much so far.

Saints LS Zach Wood suffered a calf strain and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

Wood felt calf tightness on Wednesday and was diagnosed with a Grade II calf strain after undergoing tests. The 33-year-old has not missed a game since signing with the Saints in 2017 but is now expected to be out for at least four weeks.

Cardinals TE Trey McBride (rest/back) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice.

No need to panic after McBride was seen working off to the side Wednesday; the Cardinals listed him as DNP with a rest/back designation. Despite the back being added to the designation, it does not seem like a serious injury worry with the Cardinals also giving him the “resting player” tag. This reads as a rest day for McBride. He is still good to go for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Seahawks S Nick Emmanwori (ankle/hip) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Emmanwori is still unable to get in a full practice as he nurses a pesky ankle injury, also adding a hip issue to his practice designation. He will likely need a full practice before he is set to return for the Seahawks. Fellow safety Ty Okada (hamstring) missed practice on Wednesday; both players missed Week 1 and are in jeopardy of missing Week 2 against the Cardinals.

Seahawks WR Cooper Kupp (back) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Kupp popped up on the injury report with a back issue, though he was listed as a limited participant. The veteran 33-year-old may just be having his practice reps managed as he deals with a back ailment. Barring a change, Kupp is still trending to play Week 2 against the Cardinals.

Seahawks WR Tory Horton (hamstring) was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.

Horton missed Week 1, dealing with a hamstring injury from training camp. He now finally gets in a full practice, opening Week 2 with a full participation designation. The Seahawks are preparing for the 23-year-old to return against the Cardinals, though Horton is best left off fantasy rosters with Drew Lock the starting quarterback for now.

Malik Willis (toe) was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.

Willis popped up on the Dolphins’ injury report with a toe injury, though he was a full practice participant. This indicates the issue is minor enough for the 27-year-old to keep practicing at full strength. Note down Willis’ toe issue, but expect him to be back out there for Week 2 against the 49ers.

Dolphins EDGE Chop Robinson (concussion protocol) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Robinson appeared in Week 1 against the Raiders and is now in concussion protocol to open up Week 2. The 23-year-old has a history of concussions, entering the protocol twice last season. Robinson will be thoroughly evaluated before he officially returns, given this is his third head injury over the last calendar year.

Panthers WR Jalen Coker (ankle) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.

Coker was wearing a boot after rolling his left ankle in the Panthers’ Week 1 loss against the Bears. Head coach Dave Canales told reporters that the team is confident in ramping him up in practice. The 24-year-old got in a limited practice Wednesday, doing an “extended warm up” on the side and getting a “couple of snaps” on things the Panthers are looking for him to execute. Canales added the “hope is to ramp that up a little bit more tomorrow and then cut them loose Friday. So I expect him to play on Sunday.” Coker’s ankle injury is certainly something to keep an eye on, but Canales and the Panthers are confident he will play in Week 2 against the Falcons.
