Raiders named Kirk Cousins as the team’s Week 1 starter.

With input from Tom Brady, head coach Klint Kubiak will put the 38-year-old Cousins under center for the season opener against the Dolphins. Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, will serve as Cousins’ backup. How long this arrangement will last is anyone’s guess. A good start to the regular season could delay Mendoza’s first NFL start for a couple months but he’s almost certain to take over as the Vegas starter at some point in 2026. Mendoza should be stashed in most superflex formats and Cousins profiles as a decent QB2 in such formats for Week 1.

Cousins and the Raiders did everything they could to remain undefeated, but came up just short in a game that came down to the wire against their division rivals. Cousins led the Raiders right down the field on their opening drive and capped it with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ian Thomas, who was wide open for an easy score. After leading multiple drives that ended in field goals, Cousins came up big for the Raiders in the fourth quarter when he avoided a sack in the pocket and stepped up to find Brock Bowers in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion play to Cody White cut the Chiefs’ lead to 30-27, but with the Raiders driving in the final seconds of regulation, Cousins would throw the game-ending interception to hand the Chiefs their fourth-straight win of the season. Cousins and the Raiders proved to be legit in this one, as they went blow-for-blow with the Chiefs to the very end. Now sitting with a 3-1 record, the Raiders will look to rebound in Week 5 against the Patriots. Cousins has thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this season and has now thrown for 11 TDs to four INTs. He’ll be in the mix as a strong QB2 next week.

Cousins had a few off-target passes in this one, but he certainly loves having Brock Bowers in the lineup. The duo linked up 10 times on the day, which opened things up for the rest of the offense as the game progressed. Coach Klint Kubiak sent Bowers in motion inside the green zone on a play-action play seemingly designed for Michael Mayer, who got open with ease on a short out route and hauled in the score. Cousins fumbled while being hit late in the game, but a teammate recovered, preserving his turnover-free outing. He warrants borderline QB1/2 treatment against the Chiefs next week.

Cousins was intercepted on the Raiders’ opening drive of the game, but no one was necessarily at fault. Cousins threw a well-timed ball to Tre Tucker on an in-breaking route and the speedy receiver slipped while cutting, leaving the pass to sail into enemy hands. The veteran passer needed a few more drives to get in rhythm but eventually began to pick apart the LA defense. He completed four passes of 20+ yards, something he managed just once in Week 1. Cousins remains more of a ball distributor than anything else, but he has looked good in that role through two weeks. There are worse Superflex options for Week 3 when Cousins takes on the Saints.

The Raiders’ first punt occurred with just over 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Cousins was only asked to manage this game, and he did so moderately effectively. Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty scored two of Cousins’ passing touchdowns on catch-and-run plays via routes out of the backfield. Cousins deserves credit for hitting WR Jack Bech in stride on a 15-yard score, but he also deserves blame for both interceptions. One was an overthrow; the other was late. Cousins is a QB2 next week against the Chargers.

An NFL head coach consulting with an NFL announcer on who his team should start under center is a brave new world for the league. It looks like the Raiders are set on Kirk Cousins to start Week 1 against the Dolphins after Fernando Mendoza’s spotty preseason play and struggles in training camp. Look for Cousins to target his short-area pass catchers relentlessly, like he did last year in Atlanta. It won’t be long before Mendoza gets a shot at starting duties. He should be rostered in most superflex leagues.

Appearing on NFL Live Friday afternoon, Fowler said that people inside the Raiders’ building and around the league still expect Cousins to be named the starter. Raiders HC Klint Kubiak declined to name a starting quarterback Friday morning. Following the loss of Thursday’s preseason game against the 49ers, Kubiak said rookie Fernando Mendoza needs another three preseason games before going as far as mentioning that Mendoza’s practice reps will decline once the regular season begins. While Kubiak continues to drag his feet when it comes to the official announcement, all signs still point to Cousins being named the starter at some point eventually.

That’s three straight weeks that Kubiak has declined to name his Week 1 starter despite the widely held belief that it will be Kirk Cousins getting the start in Week 1 against the Dolphins. Cousins has received the majority of first-team reps throughout the offseason and limited action in the preseason, while Fernando Mendoza has worked mostly with backups and played extensively in every preseason game. We’ll see just how long Kubiak is willing to stretch this decision out, but it would come as a surprise to almost everyone if Mendoza got the nod over Cousins in Week 1.

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak declined to name a starting quarterback last week (and again this evening), but Cousins certainly received starter treatment this evening. He played two series, along with the Raiders’ other starters, before being subbed out for QB Fernando Mendoza. The rookie quarterback is playing well. He shares fault with WR Jalen Nailor for the interception. The throw was late, and Nailor tipped it to a 49ers defender. The 49ers’ pass rush also got home a few times against Mendoza as well. Cousins looks like the early-season starter at this time, but stashing Mendoza on benches in superflex leagues could eventually pay off.

Kirk Cousins didn’t play a snap in Thursday night’s game, but despite the decision not to dress his veteran QB, Kubiak opted not to commit to a starter just yet. Rookie Fernando Mendoza played the entire first half of yesterday’s game, completing 8-of-15 passes for 86 yards, with one of his incompletions resulting in an 80-yard pick-six. It’s long been believed that the Raiders’ plan entering this season was to go with Cousins as the starter before eventually making the move to Mendoza later in the year. While that may still end up being how things unfold, Kubiak’s decision not to name a starter on a night when several starters sat has raised questions ahead of the team’s third and final preseason game next week against the 49ers.
  • Washington looked good once again this week. His best play was an explosive gain on the Raiders’ first drive. Washington ran into the back of the line briefly but bounced off contact and took off downfield for a 33-yard gain. He was tackled by his shoestrings on the Texans’ 25-yard line. Unfortunately, the next play wasn’t great. Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza decided to check down to Washington on a play-action dropback, but the pass was intercepted and returned for an 80-yard touchdown. Texans LB Wade Woodaz made a great play on the ball. Washington possibly could have done a better job of maintaining spatial awareness and boxing Woodaz out, but the result of the play does not fall entirely on Washington’s shoulders. The rookie running back could offer standalone FLEX value this season. At worst, he is a high-upside stash.

Ryan Flournoy caught 3-of-4 targets for 90 yards in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Flournoy continues to operate as the clear WR3 behind CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, typically incapable of returning viable fantasy production in their shadows. He hit for a 48-yard reception at the end of the second quarter to set up a go-ahead field goal entering the break, otherwise remaining about as quiet as we would expect. This was the first game in 2026 over a modest 37 yards for Flournoy, who could be tasked with additional emphasis in the immediate future after Lamb departed with a quad injury in the fourth quarter. He could be worth a speculative add ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the reeling Packers.

Jake Ferguson caught 3-of-6 targets for 19 yards in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Ferguson committed two uncharacteristic drops against the Buccaneers, the second of which resulted in a game-sealing interception to push the Cowboys to 2-3 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Packers. Now held to 43 yards or fewer in five consecutive games, Ferguson is relegated to a touchdown-dependent TE2.

George Pickens caught 9-of-13 targets for 130 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

Pickens was the primary target throughout the game against the single-high-heavy Buccaneers, scoring a late fourth quarter touchdown to cap off his first impressive fantasy outing of the young season. Furthermore, fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb departed the game in the fourth quarter with a quad injury that he was unable to play through, potentially setting up Pickens for immense volume in a Week 6 meeting with the Packers at Lambeau. Fantasy managers have patiently watched as Lamb stole the show through the first four games of 2026, but it now appears as if Pickens will have his time to shine, pending the severity of Lamb’s soft tissue injury. Pickens is a WR2 with Lamb active and a surefire WR1 with Lamb out.

Javonte Williams rushed 12 times for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers, adding 17 yards on two receptions.

Williams has now averaged 3.8 yards per carry or fewer in four of five games, keeping his fantasy value afloat via six combined touchdowns through five weeks. While the touchdown equity is solid in one of the league’s most potent offenses, we’re liable to see more down weeks like the one he put forth against the Buccaneers unless, or until, the Cowboys can fix their woes on the ground. Williams did see all but one running back opportunity in this one, keeping him in the top six in backfield opportunity rate through Week 5. Consider Williams a volume-aided and touchdown-aided RB2 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the reeling Packers.

Dak Prescott completed 24-of-42 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Cowboys’ 24-16, Week 5 loss to the Buccaneers.

The two interceptions on Dak’s ledger were both in-and-out of his receivers’ hands, the second of which hit tight end Jake Ferguson in the face mask to allow the Buccaneers to ice the game in the fourth quarter. The first “pick” bounced off the hands of Ryan Flournoy to allow the Buccaneers to establish an 11-point lead at the beginning of the third quarter, a deficit the Cowboys would be unable to overcome. That said, Prescott wasn’t at all at his sharpest, missing numerous throws wide in addition to a few badly under-thrown balls in the second half. To make matters worse, alpha wide receiver CeeDee Lamb departed the game in the fourth quarter with a quad injury. The Cowboys fall to 2-3 and find themselves looking up at both the Giants and Eagles ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Packers at Lambeau. Prescott returns to QB1 status in what has become a soft matchup, pending the health of Lamb.

Ted Hurst was not targeted in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Hurst has seen his role eaten into by downfield threat Tez Johnson as the season has progressed, clearly not yet ready to take on a full workload in the offense as he enters the second month of his rookie season. Hurst brings the size and physicality to grow into a consistent producer at the NFL level, something fantasy managers could have to be patient with in the coming weeks. Hurst safely remains a bench stash ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.

Chris Godwin caught all three targets for 37 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Godwin’s three targets finished tied for fourth on the team behind Emeka Egbuka, Cade Otton, and Kenny Gainwell on a night backup quarterback Jalon Daniels attempted only 25 passes. Week 5 now marks the fourth game in five tries in which Godwin was held to four targets or fewer, leaving the veteran wide receiver completely unusable in a fantasy setting, for the time being. He can safely be stashed on benches ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.

Emeka Egbuka caught 6-of-9 targets for 38 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys, adding 14 yards and a touchdown on one carry.

Egbuka’s nine targets handily led the team on a night undrafted free agent rookie Jalon Daniels attempted only 25 passes. The team also demonstrated an active desire to get Egbuka more involved following a four-target game against the Packers a week ago, feeding him a red zone carry on a jet sweep for his touchdown score. Egbuka remains at the mercy of the team’s lackluster quarterback situation for at least another week, pending Baker Mayfield’s injury. He’ll be a shaky WR3 against the Steelers in Week 6.

Tez Johnson caught his only target for 64 yards in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys.

Two of Johnson’s five receptions this season have accounted for 113 yards in what has become a situational role for the Buccaneers behind Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin, and rookie Ted Hurst. That big play ability remains unlikely to translate into consistent fantasy production while running a route on less than a third of the team’s dropbacks, meaning Johnson is likely best left on the waiver wire.

Bucky Irvin rushed 21 times for 165 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ Week 5 win over the Cowboys, adding 10 yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Irving cashed in on an early touchdown on the team’s first possession on a reception from quarterback Jalon Daniels on a leak to the right side of the formation, otherwise having a relatively quiet first half. Things would change in a hurry after the break as Irving ripped off a 72-yard explosive run on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter. He would cash in on his second trip to paint on the following drive from one yard out before somewhat confusingly retreating to the sideline without his helmet the following two possessions. That raised speculation that his glute injury had flared up, a notion he would dispel in the fourth quarter as he helped to ice the game. This game goes down as his first 100-yard rushing game since Week 16 of his rookie season in 2024. Irving remains a volatile RB2 ahead of a Week 6 meeting with the Steelers.
