Kirk Cousins completed 19-of-29 passes for 253 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in the Raiders’ 26-14, Week 2 win over the Chargers.

Cousins was intercepted on the Raiders’ opening drive of the game, but no one was necessarily at fault. Cousins threw a well-timed ball to Tre Tucker on an in-breaking route and the speedy receiver slipped while cutting, leaving the pass to sail into enemy hands. The veteran passer needed a few more drives to get in rhythm but eventually began to pick apart the LA defense. He completed four passes of 20+ yards, something he managed just once in Week 1. Cousins remains more of a ball distributor than anything else, but he has looked good in that role through two weeks. There are worse Superflex options for Week 3 when Cousins takes on the Saints.

Cousins and the Raiders strung together a handful of nice drives in Sunday’s loss to the Bills, but they needed to be just about perfect to slow Buffalo’s offensive attack. With Brock Bowers bottled up for most of the evening, Cousins connected with tight end Michael Mayer seven times for 95 yards, with his lone touchdown passes coming on passes of 11 and 44 yards to Tre Tucker in the fourth quarter. The 44-yard touchdown pass to Tucker came inside of two minutes and with the Bills up by 10, but Cousins and Tucker took advantage of a struggling Bills’ defense to complete the long score and keep things interesting in the waning seconds. Now losers of three straight games, the Raiders will hope to avoid a fourth straight loss next week when they host the suddenly 2-4 Rams. Cousins continues to enjoy a career revival under Klint Kubiak and has now thrown for 1,582-14-5 in his first six games. He’ll be in the QB2 mix for next week’s game against the Rams.

No real surprise after Mendoza’s mop-up appearance in Week 5. It doesn’t appear that he’s taken a major step towards unseating Cousins — who has played well — just yet. But it remains a reasonable bet to happen in the near future.

Cousins didn’t play poorly, but didn’t do much beyond connecting with Brock Bowers for some long gains in the first half. The Patriots avalanched the severely overmatched Raiders in the third quarter. Cousins was sacked three times while narrowly avoiding a few other big losses, as the Vegas offensive line struggled to protect him throughout. His muted showing comes after 11 touchdown tosses over the season’s first four games in Klint Kubiak’s offense. Cousins will look to bounce back in Week 6 against the Bills in what should be a high-scoring affair.

Cousins and the Raiders did everything they could to remain undefeated, but came up just short in a game that came down to the wire against their division rivals. Cousins led the Raiders right down the field on their opening drive and capped it with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ian Thomas, who was wide open for an easy score. After leading multiple drives that ended in field goals, Cousins came up big for the Raiders in the fourth quarter when he avoided a sack in the pocket and stepped up to find Brock Bowers in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion play to Cody White cut the Chiefs’ lead to 30-27, but with the Raiders driving in the final seconds of regulation, Cousins would throw the game-ending interception to hand the Chiefs their fourth-straight win of the season. Cousins and the Raiders proved to be legit in this one, as they went blow-for-blow with the Chiefs to the very end. Now sitting with a 3-1 record, the Raiders will look to rebound in Week 5 against the Patriots. Cousins has thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this season and has now thrown for 11 TDs to four INTs. He’ll be in the mix as a strong QB2 next week.

Cousins had a few off-target passes in this one, but he certainly loves having Brock Bowers in the lineup. The duo linked up 10 times on the day, which opened things up for the rest of the offense as the game progressed. Coach Klint Kubiak sent Bowers in motion inside the green zone on a play-action play seemingly designed for Michael Mayer, who got open with ease on a short out route and hauled in the score. Cousins fumbled while being hit late in the game, but a teammate recovered, preserving his turnover-free outing. He warrants borderline QB1/2 treatment against the Chiefs next week.

The Raiders’ first punt occurred with just over 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Cousins was only asked to manage this game, and he did so moderately effectively. Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty scored two of Cousins’ passing touchdowns on catch-and-run plays via routes out of the backfield. Cousins deserves credit for hitting WR Jack Bech in stride on a 15-yard score, but he also deserves blame for both interceptions. One was an overthrow; the other was late. Cousins is a QB2 next week against the Chargers.

With input from Tom Brady, head coach Klint Kubiak will put the 38-year-old Cousins under center for the season opener against the Dolphins. Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, will serve as Cousins’ backup. How long this arrangement will last is anyone’s guess. A good start to the regular season could delay Mendoza’s first NFL start for a couple months but he’s almost certain to take over as the Vegas starter at some point in 2026. Mendoza should be stashed in most superflex formats and Cousins profiles as a decent QB2 in such formats for Week 1.

An NFL head coach consulting with an NFL announcer on who his team should start under center is a brave new world for the league. It looks like the Raiders are set on Kirk Cousins to start Week 1 against the Dolphins after Fernando Mendoza’s spotty preseason play and struggles in training camp. Look for Cousins to target his short-area pass catchers relentlessly, like he did last year in Atlanta. It won’t be long before Mendoza gets a shot at starting duties. He should be rostered in most superflex leagues.

Appearing on NFL Live Friday afternoon, Fowler said that people inside the Raiders’ building and around the league still expect Cousins to be named the starter. Raiders HC Klint Kubiak declined to name a starting quarterback Friday morning. Following the loss of Thursday’s preseason game against the 49ers, Kubiak said rookie Fernando Mendoza needs another three preseason games before going as far as mentioning that Mendoza’s practice reps will decline once the regular season begins. While Kubiak continues to drag his feet when it comes to the official announcement, all signs still point to Cousins being named the starter at some point eventually.

That’s three straight weeks that Kubiak has declined to name his Week 1 starter despite the widely held belief that it will be Kirk Cousins getting the start in Week 1 against the Dolphins. Cousins has received the majority of first-team reps throughout the offseason and limited action in the preseason, while Fernando Mendoza has worked mostly with backups and played extensively in every preseason game. We’ll see just how long Kubiak is willing to stretch this decision out, but it would come as a surprise to almost everyone if Mendoza got the nod over Cousins in Week 1.

SNY TV’s Connor Hughes believes the Giants will likely try to trade for a running back, and Cam Skattebo is unlikely to return to his prior role.

Hughes makes clear that he thinks Skattebo’s time as the clear-cut lead back is over, recapping coach John Harbaugh’s offseason attempts to acquire a bellcow, while noting that Skattebo is currently in the doghouse. Hughes believes Skattebo is a nice complementary player who can function as a physical change-of-pace option. The biggest issue the Giants face in replacing him is cost. He thinks a player like Jonathan Taylor will cost a Day 2 pick, at least, and he is not sure Taylor is worth that, given the Giants’ long-term plans for the 2027 draft capital they’ve accrued via various personnel moves. Trading away Kayvon Thibodeaux is an option, but doing so is challenging with Brian Burns (knee) out for the year.

Lamar Jackson (ankle) practiced on Thursday.

After a weird limited session on Wednesday where he wasn’t out in front of the media, Jackson practiced today in full view of reporters, who noted that he was not favoring his ankle at all. Jackson’s injury has always felt tenuous, but even if Wednesday was sort of an aberration, he has to at least be considered to be moving towards playing. Friday’s status will tell the rest of the story, we expect him to at least be questionable after practicing the first two days of the week.

Breece Hall (quad) returned to practice on Thursday.

Reporters on the scene said that Hall headed to the rehab area after reporters left the scene, so he’ll probably be given a limited session. Still, he moved well and likely at least has a chance to suit up for Week 7 after this update. Friday’s practice will be telling. It would be surprising if Hall doesn’t at least hit the questionable line as long as he practices on Friday.

SNY TV’s Connor Hughes believes the Giants will stick with J.J. McCarthy as the starter “for the foreseeable future.”

According to Hughes, “this is the player they targeted and wanted” as their quarterback the minute Jaxson Dart (knee) got hurt. Hughes acknowledges that coach John Harbaugh could eventually bench McCarthy later in the year, but it will take more than a bad “game or two” for that to happen. In the meantime, the weekly fantasy football outlooks for Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely are more volatile than they were with Jameis Winston at the helm. Selling high could make sense. Hughes adds that McCarthy would have to play like a top-10 quarterback to make the coaching staff consider him for the starting role next season. That outcome seems highly unlikely.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Elijah Arroyo will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the 2026 season.

Arroyo will have multiple injured reserve stints on his NFL record by the time his third season begins next year. Arroyo has caught 16-of-26 targets for 196 yards and one touchdown in regular season play thus far in his career. The talented receiving tight end fell in the 2025 NFL Draft due to knee-related health concerns. Hopefully, a strong offseason propels him to career-best figures in 2027.

Seahawks activated Zach Charbonnet (knee) from the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Charbonnet underwent ACL reconstruction after suffering his season-ending knee injury in the Seahawks’ Divisional Round win over the 49ers. He will make his 2026 debut in Week 7 against the Chiefs, facing his former teammate, Kenneth Walker. Charbonnet’s expected workload is unknown, though he could handle enough touches to be FLEX-viable. As long as he stays healthy, Charbonnet should advance to the RB2 ranks in the coming weeks.

Baker Mayfield said his injured thumb has “gotten to a place where it’s strong enough to play” in Week 7 against the Panthers.

Mayfield has played through injuries regularly over the years. We expect him to be out there for the Buccaneers’ Week 7 game against the division rival Panthers. He is a QB2 for his first game back. A run-heavy game plan could be in the works as they ease him in. If his thumb really is good to go, though, this game could turn into a shootout.

Andrew Thomas (groin) resumed practicing on Thursday.

Thomas, the team’s left tackle, RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf) and backup OT Marcus Mbow (knee) are “all on the practice field participating to some degree in position drills during the media viewing period,” per USA Today’s Art Stapleton. This is good news for the Giants’ offense as a whole.

NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson reports that David Montgomery (groin) is not expected to play in Week 7 against the Giants.

Like we said yesterday, Montgomery is still seemingly in the week-to-week camp. Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale will likely split backfield touches this week. The Texans used both Marks and Jawhar Jordan last week, but Jordan suffered an injured reserve-worthy injury. Marks should be in starting lineups, but he may be more of a FLEX than a reliable RB2. Ogunbowale is a low-floor PPR dart throw.

Chiefs placed Josh Simmons on injured reserve with a back injury.

The Chiefs made head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder available to the media to explain the 2026 Simmons Saga today. On August 17th, the young left tackle reported calf discomfort in the same leg that he underwent a patellar tendon repair in 2024. Chiefs trainers discovered that a bulging, herniated disc in his lumbar spine was causing the lower-leg issue. According to Burkholder, offensive linemen occasionally deal with this type of disc issue, but Simmons’ issue was complicated because it was abnormally high up in the lumbar spine. Simmons consulted with a well-regarded spine specialist, who recommended rehabilitation instead of surgery. Imaging taken early in the rehab process showed improvement, so they stayed the course, but unfortunately, Simmons’ recovery has recently plateaued, leading to the injured reserve placement. Simmons will be eligible to return for the Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Cardinals.
