Ben Johnson non-committal on Week 4 quarterback

Head coach Ben Johnson was in his bag from the opening series, trusting Keenum to take to the air on the team’s first two plays from scrimmage. That set the tone for the remainder of the game as the Bears dominated time of possession, running 69 offensive plays to the 47 of the Eagles. Keenum was not perfect by any stretch, with no fewer than three attempts that placed the ball in immediate danger. He would escape with a clean sheet in the turnover department while exceeding expectations within the structure of Johnson’s offense, routinely delivering the football on time and where it needed to go. His counting stats were padded slightly by a 41-yard touchdown to Kalif Raymond against busted coverage in the third quarter and a fourth quarter rushing plunge from one yard out, but he did enough to guide the Bears to a 2-1 record ahead of a Week 4 meeting with the Jets. It remains unclear if Keenum will draw another start under center now that Tyson Bagent will have a full week of preparation. Neither would be an exciting fantasy option against Aaron Glenn’s New York defense.

He said this on FOX’s pre-game show. Per Glazer, they couldn’t make Bagent the starter because he wasn’t involved in enough of the game planning, but with Caleb Williams now due to miss 3-4 weeks, Bagent could easily start Week 4’s game against the Jets. It’s also possible Bagent makes a relief appearance in Week 3 if Keenum looks rough. Bagent likely should be added in any superflex leagues where his concussion left him on the waiver wire.

Schefter noted that Williams could return sooner, and the timeline is simply an estimate from the doctors. Still, it would be risky for the team to rush him back, even if he is pushing to play. Williams has already been ruled out for Week 3 and Tyson Bagent is questionable because of a concussion. If he isn’t ready when the Bears take on the Eagles on Monday, Case Keenum will draw the start.

Williams is likely looking at a multi-week absence after injuring his hamstring in Week 2. Tyson Bagent is in the final stages of the concussion protocol after practicing in full Saturday but will need to be cleared by an independent neurologist Sunday to suit up on Monday Night Football against the Eagles. Bagent is officially listed as questionable.

With Caleb Williams (hamstring) not expected to play in Week 3’s Monday Night Football showdown against the Eagles, Bagent’s status holds extra weight this week. He missed practice through Friday with a concussion, but has since been cleared to resume practice. He will still need to remain asymptomatic for two consecutive days to fully clear protocol. Bagent would only be a desperation play in super-flex leagues against the Eagles.

Bagent will almost certainly be ruled out for the Bears’ Week 3 Monday Night Football game against the Eagles, paving the way for his backup, QB Case Keenum, to get the start.

This isn’t much of an update, but it bears noting. Williams is considered week-to-week at this point. He is not practicing, nor is QB2 Tyson Bagent (concussion). Bagent might have a better chance to play than Williams does, but neither player is on the right side of questionable. Bears QB3 Case Keenum will “likely” start on Monday Night Football against the Eagles in Week 3.

The Bears’ QB1 Caleb Williams (hamstring) and QB2 Bagent are both sidelined, leaving QB3 Case Keenum to take first-team reps. If Bagent can clear the NFL’s concussion protocol soon, he has a chance to start in Week 3 against the Eagles on Monday Night Football, but Keenum looks like the most likely starter.

Tyson Bagent has not been cleared to practice while he works his way through the league’s concussion protocol. Caleb Williams (hamstring) is unlikely to practice this week, let alone play. That leaves just Keenum at quarterback on the active roster. The Bears have an extra day to get healthy because they play on Monday night, but all signs point to Keenum drawing the start. It will be hard to get any Chicago pass-catcher in fantasy lineups with Keenum under center.

In Week 1, the Bears scored 59 points. In Week 3, they will potentially be starting Case Keenum against the Eagles. Life comes at you fast. Bagent will have an extra day to clear protocol because the Bears play on Monday night, but we’ve seen teams be very cautious with concussions over the past few years and it should probably be regarded as more likely than not that Bagent misses Week 3.
