Nick Muse catches first career touchdown pass.

Via The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, “Muse was a four-sport athlete in high school and led the team to the 2016 3A state title as a linebacker and tight end. A no-star recruit, he committed to FCS William & Mary where he played two seasons. He transferred to South Carolina and was ruled eligible early in the 2019 season. He tore his ACL late in 2019, but finished top three on the team in receiving the last two years. Lined up inline and on the wing, Muse is a good-sized, presentable target with plus foot-speed, but needs a runway to create separation as a route-runner. While he is a rugged blocker at the line of scrimmage and second level, his lack of length will leave him out-leveraged, especially on the edge. Overall, Muse is up and down as a blocker and needs to cut down on the drops, but he is a ‘make it’ competitor with enough athleticism to compete for a backup role in the NFL.”

Muse (6'4/250) The senior tight end, whose brother Tanner was a safety at rival Clemson, caught 30 passes for 425 yards and one touchdown in ten games this fall. Muse’s best performance came in a loss to Georgia, as he caught eight passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Regardless of who new HC Shane Beamer picks to be his starting quarterback, Muse will be a valuable target for the Gamecocks in 2021.

“He’s still working through some things... but I look forward to him coming back and being a great leader on this team. We need him,” Kimrey said when asked about Muse (6'4/250). It’s not often that a tight end leads the team in receiving by just over 100 yards. Not only did Muse (6'3/232) do that, but he scored the team’s only receiving touchdown and earned twice as many receptions as anyone else. Muse did crack the game open a bit with his 35-yard catch, but most of his work was in the short area. Muse was a wonderful safety blanket for freshman QB Luke Doty.

Muse (6'3/232) served as QB Collin Hill’s security blanket in a slippery affair that suppressed downfield passing for both teams. His 17.0 YPC average led the team and his six targets were tied for first with RB Kevin Harris. Muse had only posed six catches for 71 yards on the young season but helped South Carolina extend drives with multiple third down receptions. South Carolina welcomes the Auburn Tigers to Columbia next Saturday.

Muse (6'3/232) spent much of his offseason rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered during the Gamecocks’ matchup against Vanderbilt back in November. With the senior deemed good to go he’ll lead a position group that’s lacking in the way of experience as five tight ends are either true or redshirt freshmen. Redshirt freshman KeShawn Toney is listed as Muse’s backup on the two-deep.

Muse (6'3/232) suffered a torn ACL in November against Vanderbilt, and that obviously caused him to miss the remainder of the season. He caught 17 passes for 158 yards before the injury, and with a very inexperienced tight end group -- Kendall notes that five of the eight players at the position for South Carolina are classified as redshirt freshman or freshman -- so Muse will certainly be called on to be the top tight end if he is healthy to begin the campaign.

Muse (6'3/232) suffered the injury during the first half of Saturday’s 24-7 win over the Commodores, a game in which he caught one pass for 15 yards before leaving. The junior tight end finishes the 2019 season with 17 catches for 158 yards. With Muse out for the season, junior Chandler Farrell moves up in the pecking order at tight end behind starter Kyle Markway.

HC Will Muschamp said after the game that he did not have an update on Muse (6'3/232). “Don’t know much right now,” Muschamp said. The junior hauled in one reception for 15 yards before departing. Next up for South Carolina is a non-conference tilt with Appalachian State, and it’s uncertain if Muse will be able to inspire his teammates on the field or from the sidelines.

Muse transferred to the Gamecocks from William & Mary and June, and he finally has his answer as to whether he can play. He can. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound tight end should see plenty of playing time, and he has a good chance to be a safety target for Ryan Hilinski in his first ever collegiate start.
