Playing La Quinta Country Club and making his tournament debut, PGA TOUR rookie and World No. 439 Joey Garber tossed up an 8-under-par 30-34=64 in the second round of the Desert Classic for a 36-hole tally of 12-under 132, up 26 places to T5, four short of leader Phil Mickelson.
This is a career low for the Georgia alum in 23 rounds, previously 67 (x2). It’s his fifth start of the season, checking in off an 81/MDF at last week’s Sony as an alternate. On eight (of 14) fairways and 15 greens in regulation, the 27-year-old squared a lone bogey-5 at 10, smothered by seven birdies at 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 13 and 15, adding eagle-3 at 5. After opening with 68 on the Stadium Course (1 eagle-3, 3 birdies, 1 bogey), he’ll move over to the Nicklaus Tournament Course for Saturday’s Round 3.
