Twenty-one-year-old amateur Austin Greaser will make his U.S. Open debut this week after earning his spot in the field at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., via his runner-up finish at the 2021 U.S. Amateur.
Greaser, from Vandalia, Ohio, lost to James Piot 2 and 1 in last year’s 36-hole U.S. Am final at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club. As a junior at North Carolina last season, Greaser won the Fighting Illini Invitational in the fall semester for his first college victory and earned All-East Region and All-ACC honors for the second consecutive year. He captured his second win at the NCAA New Haven Regional, where he beat Alex Fitzpatrick and teammate Ryan Gerard by one stroke. Greaser, an honorable mention All-American, helped UNC reach the match-play portion of the NCAA finals, where he won his quarterfinal match over Pepperdine’s William Mouw, but the Tar Heels lost to the Waves, 3-2. Greaser missed the cut at the Masters.
