Day

Day crept up a couple of spots to a T7 position. He is six shots back going into the final round. Day needs to stay hot with the putter.

Day started the week no higher than 25th alternate. He gained entry due to three withdrawals this afternoon. The one-time champ on the PGA TOUR was last fully exempt in 2009. He placed T31 at the True South Classic two weeks ago. He missed the cut at the Heritage in his only other start on the circuit this season.

Day was making just his second start of the year, and his performance this week has already locked up a top 15 and possibly a top-10 finish. Should he remain in the top 10 as the leaders finish the day, he will have the option to play the Travelers Championship in two weeks. Irons were the key to his week, landing 65.28 percent of his GIR. He’ll watch the final hour play out with his fingers crossed.

Day was the fourth alternate when the field was released on Friday afternoon. He gained entry due to four withdrawals. He finished T83/MDF in his only start this season at the RBC Heritage. He’s also 1-for-5 on the Web.com Tour. The 47-year-old will be making his 18th appearance at TPC Southwind where he’s survived his last four cuts (2007-2010).

Day is 4-under 136 at the midpoint. After keeping his ball in play for much of Thursday, he split only seven (of 14) fairways and hit 10 greens in regulation today. The inconsistency led to four bogeys, but he also converted four birdies, including a conventional roll from 14'3" at the 14th hole and an eight-yard chip-in from the rough at 5.

Day split 11 (of 14) fairways and hit 14 greens in regulation en route to five birdies, all from inside 10 feet. He also missed two tries in that range -- both for birdie -- and incurred one bogey, that a 5 at the 12th hole where he couldn’t get up and down from a greenside bunker. He’s one of six splitting the lead at TPC Southwind.

Day is the only golfer in the field to earn his spot via an exemption afforded winners through 1999. In fact, even though he hasn’t had fully exempt status on the PGA TOUR every year since, he hasn’t missed a tee time at Harbour Town during the down years. He hit 12 greens in regulation today and put on a show with his putter. Five of his six birdies disappeared from beyond 11 feet. The most notable of the bunch measured 19'3" at the fifth hole and 21'5" at 6. He also fanned on three putts inside nine feet, including a pair of five-footers, but he buried a par save of 13'1" at 12. The 47-year-old carded a 67 in his RBC opener in 2010, but failed to break par the rest of the week.

Day picked a nice event to win, with his 1999 triumph at Harbour Town paying off with continued exemptions into the event. He’s only playing with Past Champion status, so we don’t have much to go on in terms of current form. He’s missed his last two cuts in this event, with his last top 25 all the way back in 2003.

Day circled seven birdies against two bogeys in the season’s final four-spotter. He’s currently 187th in FedExCup points, all but assured of an opportunity to compete in the Web.com Tour Finals; Nos. 126-200 in the standings are eligible.
