Younes El Hassani gave Morocco a surprise home presence on the first-round leaderboard at the Trophée Hassan II after posting a bogey-free 3-under-par 37-32=69 on Thursday.

That’s just a single swing behind joint leaders Jason Scrivener and Francesco Laporta. El Hassani, who can be found at 1,117th in the world rankings, made 11 straight pars after starting his day on the 10th hole at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam. He snapped the sequence with a birdie at 3 and finished strongly with further gains at 7 and 9. The 42-year-old has played in five previous events at this venue but only made the cut once, a T62 in 2010, so it would be a major surprise if he remains near the front of the leaderboard.
