Robinson Cano will undergo surgery for a sports hernia on October 13, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. The surgery comes with a six-week recovery timetable, Divish notes. The Mariners ran tests earlier this week to confirm the injury, which Cano has been playing through throughout the second half of the season.

Cano, 32, enters play Friday batting .286/.333/.444 with 20 home runs and 76 RBI in 660 plate appearances this season. He’s near the end of the second year of his 10-year, $240 million deal with the Mariners. While his power numbers this season are comparable (and arguably better) than last year’s, he has lost nearly 30 points in average and 50 points in on-base percentage. The Mariners haven’t gotten the production they hoped they’d get when they signed him to the contract.
