Give London Fletcher and his Redskins teammates credit for making an effort.
Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that 30 players showed for the second day of their player-organized “minicamp” on Wednesday. Some flew in from all over the country, like John Beck from San Diego.
“It’s that important,” said Beck. “It’s about coming out here with your teammates and getting better.”
Players from Texas, Florida, and Lousiana flew in for the event, which was organized by Fletcher. The group was deep at certain positions like tight end. It was thin elsewhere.
Jones writes that defensive lineman Kedric Golston had to line up at free safety at one point. Nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu became a receiver on one play so linebacker Rob Jackson had someone to cover.
The minicamp was only scheduled for two days, but plenty of players will stick around and continue to workout together. It’s an impressive show of unity.
We can almost hear it now, if the Redskins make a surprise run to a playoff berth: “It all started on that high school in Northern Virginia, with no coaches in sight.”
