The condition of the turf at Levi’s Stadium has been a frequent issue since the 49ers moved into the building and nothing has changed this summer.
As discussed on Thursday, the grass field is once again not up to fulfilling its purpose as a surface for football activities and that’s forced the 49ers to change their plans for practice this weekend. The 49ers were scheduled to host a public practice at Levi’s on Sunday, but they’ve scrapped those plans in favor of working on a decent field at their practice facility.
“We extend our sincere apologies to those fans who were scheduled to attend Sunday’s practice,” Levi’s Stadium General Manager Jim Mercurio said in a statement. “After a thorough inspection earlier today, our grounds crew determined that the field would not be ready by Sunday. Therefore, the recommendation was made to relocate practice. We remain confident that our turf management program will provide a playing surface that meets the team’s standards, as we enter the 2015 NFL season.”
There’s a Taylor Swift concert scheduled for Levi’s Stadium on August 15 and the team plans to install new sod after shaking off the crowds that will attend that show. Based on what we’ve seen in the past, however, any blank slate that isn’t made of an artificial turf won’t promise better results.
