Wide receiver Conner Vernon will always be able to tell people that he scored a touchdown while wearing a Bengals uniform.

He might leave out the fact that he was waived by the team the very next day. Vernon was one of three players let go by the Bengals on Friday, one day after they opened their preseason schedule with a loss to the Chiefs that came despite Vernon’s touchdown catch.

Receiver was clearly a spot that the Bengals wanted to thin out the ranks as Jeremy Johnson joined Vernon on the discard pile. They also cut defensive tackle Zach Minter, leaving their roster at 86 players.

They may move back toward 90 by adding a quarterback. Jason Campbell left the game in the third quarter with what appeared to be an injury to his throwing arm and Geoff Hobson of the team’s website reports that the team could add a player at the position even if Campbell avoided serious injury. Matt Scott, who threw the touchdown to Vernon and also threw up on the field, is on the active roster and A.J. McCarron is on the non-football list with Hobson reporting that the team is unlikely to activate him as he continues to nurse a shoulder injury.
