Free agent wideout Brandon Lloyd told PFT Live in February that he’d “like to entertain” the possibility of playing for the New England Patriots. Lloyd has an obvious tie to new Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who helped resurrect Lloyd’s career in Denver.
Lloyd took it a step further in an interview with Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England this week. Lloyd said he’s “very interested” in the Patriots with just five days left before the market opens.
“Very interested,” Lloyd stressed. “And like I said earlier, I admire coach Bill [Belichick], I admire Tom Brady, I admire how they run things over there.
“Any receiver to be considered to come in and play on the New England Patriots is gonna be excited just because of the history of success.”
Lloyd makes an awful lot of sense for the Patriots. He’s a vertical wide receiver, a role Chad Ochocinco failed to fill last season. Deion Branch was New England’s primary downfield threat, but he is unsigned, going on age 33, and declining rapidly.
While Lloyd recently had light contract talks with the Rams, the following statements he made to Curran strongly indicate Lloyd would much prefer to play for a contender like New England:
“Winning is definitely the highest priority,” he said. “I’ve been in the league for ten years now and I don’t look at the NFL as a place where I can hoard money and get as much as I can because it’s the end of the world.”
