Chargers G.M. sits down with Merriman’s agent for two hours

Shawne Merriman has changed agents, which has at least temporarily changed his relationship with his employers.

Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith sat down with Merriman’s new agent David Dunn for two hours on Thursday, an indication that this was more than just an introductory chat after changing representation.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego-Union Tribune puts the meeting in context, saying that Smith will only talk to a handful of agents and usually isn’t involved with them.

“Tom Condon, Merriman’s former agent, was practically a nemesis of Smith’s,” Acee writes.

Smith called the meeting “very productive and enlightening.” He says he’s open-minded about Merriman’s situation.

“I’m not in a perfect situation,” Merriman said. “But I can make it the best situation.”

For now, this qualifies as progress. And it’s another indication Merriman is unlikely to go anywhere before the 2010 season.
