Chris Johnson’s status on active roster didn’t shield him from fines

AD200810496402452AR

Here’s one for the folks out there who love the details of the football business.

All three of you.

But I’m one of them, and I ultimately determine the agenda here. So here goes.

The fact that the Titans didn’t put running back Chris Johnson on the reserve/did not report list until Monday, August 29, does not allow him to avoid the $30,000 per day in fines that apply to his holdout.

“He does not have to be on the list, which is a mechanism to give the club a roster spot,” the NFL told us via e-mail. “The player’s action of not reporting is what determines the fine.”

So there you have it. By not putting Johnson on the reserve/did not report list until Monday, the Titans didn’t inadvertently forfeit the ability to pursue money they likely will never pursue anyway.

UPDATE (2:40 p.m. ET): Here’s an update on Johnson’s status from today’s PFT Live.
