The decision of the Eagles to do business with Mike Vick, and vice-versa, entails multiple levels of intrigue.
The option year of the two-year contract constitutes, in our view, one of the primary sources of potential drama.
Since the Eagles have Vick under contract for 2010 at a fairly large salary of $5.2 million, a bad year from Donovan McNabb coupled with excellent work from Vick in spot duty could prompt some to begin clamoring for Vick to become the full-time starter next year.
For now, the more likely scenario is that the Eagles will start the bidding for year two of the contract, after the current year ends.
Per a league source, the Eagles will be required to fish or cut bait on Vick by the fifth day of the 2010 league year.
This will give the team an opportunity to shop him before the start of the next league year, and then a five-day window to get it done once the new league year begins in late February or early March (or later if the league and the NFLPA agree to delay the start of the 2010 league year pending a new CBA).
So the question will be whether anyone is willing to give up a draft pick (or more) for Vick, in exchange for the ability to secure his services for $5.2 million in what could be an uncapped year.
If more than one team is interested, the Eagles might be able to leverage a pretty good deal for themselves.
