Jace Amaro third on tight end depth chart for Jets

Teams released their first unofficial depth charts of the year on Monday, which can be interesting fodder for conversation when a player ranks higher or lower than people might have guessed.

They can also be a dubious source of information about how teams are actually going to line up.

The Jets have a case like that with tight end Jace Amaro. The 2014 second-round pick didn’t do much as a rookie, but the expectation this offseason has been that he’d step into a bigger role as part of a more well-rounded group of targets for Geno Smith. That expectation would seem to be off track if you look at the team’s depth chart, however.

Amaro ranks third at tight end behind Jeff Cumberland and journeyman blocker Kellen Davis, which doesn’t look great. As with many of these depth charts, however, there’s reason to dismiss that pecking order. The Jets plan to play Amaro as an H-back while the other two play a traditional in-line tight end role, but they all get mixed together on the depth chart under the same heading.

Amaro may disappoint again this season, but the Jets are going to be giving him more of a chance to do it on the field than listing him as a No. 3 tight end would suggest.
