The family of Packers defensive end Jerel Worthy has experienced a tragedy, as his grandmother was accidentally shot and killed by his grandfather.
The Dayton Daily News reports that Mae Worthy was accidentally shot by her husband on Wednesday night and died this morning.
Police in Huber Heights, Ohio, say that Mae Worthy’s husband of 50 years, James, was handling a gun in a bedroom and accidentally fired, killing his wife in the next room.
“It went through the bedroom wall, down into the opposite end of the house and it just happened to strike her while she was sitting on the couch,” Huber Heights police Lt. Matt Dulaney said. “The evidence is in line with his story as to what he’s telling us. . . . it does appear that it is an accidental shooting.”
Prosecutors have not decided whether James Worthy will face charges for negligence with firearms. Jerel Worthy has been excused from the Packers’ Organized Team Activities while he attends to his family.
