The Bills defense is working without a couple of starters at the moment.

Coach Doug Marrone announced Wednesday that linebacker Kiko Alonso and defensive end Mario Williams are both recovering from hip surgeries as OTAs get underway in Buffalo. Neither player is taking part in team drills, but coach Doug Marrone expressed little concern that the Bills would be without them by the time training camp starts this summer.

Assuming that holds, Alonso may be more impacted by missing time on the field in the spring. He’s moving from middle linebacker to an outside spot in hopes of helping the defense in a wider variety of ways in his second season and that will leave him with some catching up to do once he is ready to get on the field.

Two offensive members of the squad are also on the road back from offseason surgery. Wide receiver Robert Woods had ankle surgery and tight end Scott Chandler had an operation on his knee, but, as with Alonso and Williams, there’s no expectation that they’ll remain out through camp.
