It’s common to hear a head coach complain about an overweight player, like Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt did recently about guard Deuce Lutui. It’s a far rarer (and more exciting) occurrence when a player’s agent fires right back at the coach.
First, agent Ken Harris told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic that it was “inappropriate” for the Cardinals to complain about Lutui’s attendance at the team’s offseason program when they wouldn’t offer him a long-term deal.
“As for his weight, [Lutui] is a hard worker and I have no doubt he will be within the range he reasonably should be when it counts,” Harris said. “If the club isn’t pleased with him, I’m happy to assist them on a possible trade. Otherwise, we should let his play on the field this season speak for itself like it did last year.”
Boom, roasted.
Lutui is coming off a solid campaign, but his starting job is no longer guaranteed. We’re torn between appreciating Harris’ moxie and wondering if engaging Whisenhunt on the matter publicly is the best way to help a client get on the field.
