Mark Ingram Sr. talks about Mark Ingram Jr.

Former NFL receiver Mark Ingram Sr., who won a Super Bowl 18 years ago with the Giants, is serving time in prison for money laundering.

His son, Mark Ingram, Jr., is on the brink of winning one of the greatest individual honors the sport has to offer.

Ingram Sr. talks about the situation with Jeff Glor of CBS Evening News in an item to be aired tonight (6:30 p.m. ET/PT).

“We’re paying for it but we’re moving on and that’s it,” Ingram said of his crime and punishment. “You can’t do anything else about it and he can’t let it affect him. He has to be his own person, his own man. Take and learn from what I’ve done, the mistakes I’ve made, the experiences that I have on the field, off the field and take it and use it to his advantage.”

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Saturday night, in New York City.

Last year, Ingram Sr. was sentenced to a seven-year, eight-month term, his third stint in a Big House far different than the one he visited while playing college football at Michigan State.

But something strange happened on the way to the hoosegow.

He didn’t show up.

The commencement of the sentence was delayed so that Ingram Sr. could enjoy his son’s freshman season at Alabama. The agreed surrender date -- December 5 -- came and went without Ingram Sr. showing up.

Ingram Sr. ultimately was apprehended on January 3, only hours before Alabama played in the Sugar Bowl.
