When looking back at the most impactful transactions of the 2015 offseason, the trade that Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan pulled off with his former employers in Houston is near the top of the list.
Maccagnan sent a conditional draft pick to the Texans for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. That pick could have been a seventh-rounder, but moved up to a sixth-rounder once Fitzpatrick established himself as the starter, but the price still turned out to be an enormous bargain.
Fitzpatrick is tied for the Jets franchise record for touchdown passes in a season with 29 after throwing three of them in last Sunday’s 26-20 victory over the Patriots. The last of those touchdowns went to Eric Decker in overtime to make the Jets winners and put them in position to go to the playoffs with a win in Week 17.
Fitzpatrick was 26-of-41 for 296 yards overall and has been named the AFC’s offensive player of the week. It’s the second time in three weeks that Fitzpatrick has received the honor and the third time in four weeks that a Jets player has been the winner.
Wide receiver Brandon Marshall won in Week 13. Marshall, who has 101 catches and 13 touchdowns, and a seventh-round pick were acquired from the Bears for a fifth-round pick, which should help make Maccagnan a contender for executive of the year honors after the season is over.
