The past few Decembers did not go well for the Cowboys or quarterback Tony Romo, but 2014 brought better results.
The Cowboys went 4-0 for the month to wrap up an NFC East title and Romo played some of his best football on the way to the crown. Romo completed 83-of-111 passes for 987 yards with 12 touchdowns and one interception over the course of the four games, which included wins over the Bears, Eagles, Colts and Redskins.
That added up to a passer rating of 133.7 for the month, which is the best passer rating for any quarterback in the month of December with at least 100 passes attempted. It’s little surprise, then, that the NFL has named Romo the NFC’s top offensive player of the month. It’s the fourth time Romo has taken home monthly honors and the first time he’s done it since December 2009.
With Romo getting the nod this month, Cowboys players have been named the conference’s best offensive player of the month three times this year. Running back DeMarco Murray took the honors in September and October and the balance he and Romo provide to the offense is a big reason why the Cowboys are hosting a playoff game this weekend.
