Wide receiver Wes Welker had quite the excitement-filled Kentucky Derby weekend last year, with a big betting score later dampened by a two-game suspension triggered by a positive test for MDMA.
Lost in the shuffle, though, was that Welker’s horse, Undrafted, was a solid second in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes the day before the Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, earning $32,170 in prize money.
Well, Undrafted is back to contest the same race in Louisville this Friday, and he’s the 7-to-2 second betting choice on the morning line in the $150,000 stakes. Post time for the race is 4:02 p.m. Eastern, and it will air on NBCSN on the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
A five-year-old gelding, Undrafted has won $540,826 in 18 career starts with four wins, one second-place finish and eight third-place finishes.
Welker, who played for Denver a season ago, is currently a free agent. In a neat twist, Friday is his birthday.
As for the matter of his Derby picks? Well, wouldn’t you like to know?
We would.
